School uniforms do not have to be expensive. A selection of uniforms can be arranged by the school to make it possible for everyone to save and look the same. What we tend to miss in all of this is how everyone feels and reacts to a uniform in school. The pros totally outweigh the cons in every way. Economically and socially uniforms are proven to reduce tension among students and bring about community. No schools are not trying to solve all of the world's social problems by turning to uniform, but trying to make it easier for students to get an education without all the meaniless distractions. Many students will look back and realize that what they believe to be an individual awareness was really not, and find that that awareness was simply peer pressure and social norms. The school must make an effort on the behalf of all students; rich, poor, and or middle class. Statistics prove that uniforms bring about character.

Jessica, It is always good to hear the side of an issue from someone who has "lived it". Your points were very clear, and they made a lot of sense. Thank you so much for writing!-Susie

I spent 6 years of my life in private school with a uniform and I can tell you right now that the more "economically-privileged" students will ALWAYS find a way to make it known to everyone else that they are better than others. My high school was especially strict with the uniform code. They eventually went from any white collared shirt (where the richer kids could wear abercrombie/hollister/american eagle shirts and the poorer kids could wear the target brand and everyone would know who's richer) to a specific shirt that the student/parents had to purchase to prove to be in uniform. Each of these "uniform shirts" were $27 and everyone would buy more than 1 shirt obviously ($54 for 2 shirts... so much for cheaper). The pants were about $56, shorts were about $36, and skirts were $42. Therefore, nothing was cheap about school uniforms. Not only did we have to purchase extremely expensive school uniforms, we had to buy clothes for the weekends, jobs (if you had one), and for some clubs/sports. Sure, everyone had a different way of individualizing themselves. Rich girls would wear diamond earrings and coach shoes, rich boys would wear a different pair of shoes every day. The poorer girls would wear the same pair of shoes all year round with target/walmart brand earrings, boys would wear the same falling-apart shoes every day. By having uniforms, you are teaching the students that conforming is good, when it's not. Each person was made different for a reason; they are their own person. Besides, by taking out something as frivolous as fashion, that just leaves open every aspect of a student open to tease and bully. Kids will start bullying their classmates based on their religion or physical characteristics, something much harder to change than their fashion sense (and that kills the self-image point). The best part of uniforms was not having to deal with the hassle of choosing what to wear. However, if laundry wasn't done the night before, you can't just put on anything that's clean in your room. You either have to deal with getting detention for not being in the complete uniform or just risk missing a full day of class. In conclusion, I'm tired of every organization/parent bringing up these points that uniforms are better because I have been able to contest every single one of those points, and better yet, been able to turn pro-uniform people to the anti-uniform side. As you can probably tell, I am a rebel... and proud of it, thank you very much.

How are you supposed to sound like you have an educated opinion when everything is spelled wrong?

I think the school uniform policy is ridiculous and it takes away from the students individualiy as well as school spirit the athletes cannot even wear school colors let alon the rest of the student body. The high school year book is like a pricon mug shot book it is ridiculous I cannot nbelieve that todays parents have let these people get away with these type of Hitler policies. I live in Detroit but I sent my son to Florida to school so he would not have to be subjected to all of the bull... that goes on here in this pitiful school district he graduate this year. I will be moving back to Florida so my daughter who just turned 5 won't have to experience the prison inmate system. They are trained for prison life not real life. Stripped way of all self dignity and self expression adn self worth I would not let thses people train my dog. That is just how ridiculous the school district is here. They even want to control the studnets undergarments but they dont have toilet paper, paper towels, or soap in the bathrooms. They claim the students stop up the toilets. I say if you treat them like animals. They will behave like animals. None of the other schools districts have that problems.

all the schools have to do is enforce the dress code they all ready have so they just force uniforms upon us. i think its just unfair because the student body would have to wear uniforms but the staff and teachers would just wear their normal clothes and be comfortable. in order to learn we need to be comfortable so uniforms might just distract us and we only go to school for learning. keep uniforms to private schools. leave the public schools alone.

I totally agree. I'm sick of seeing girls with thongs hanging out in my face, and seeing boxers drag all over the place.
