Lisa, Thanks for your comments. It does give you a sense of peace knowing you can get in touch with your children at any time.-Susie
-- Contributed by: Susie1506My kids just turned 12 & 10. Both have had cell phones for a couple of years. Many people have told me I am crazy for purchasing them for children, including my mother! Until her child attended activities and found it was a convient way of keeping in touch. They do come in handy and can also help teach them the importance of responsibility.
-- Contributed by: LisaI don't have a problem with older, responsible children having cell phones for emergency situations. For instance, if a date or party gets out of hand. I don't believe they belong in school or other places where a child's undivided attention is needed.
I also believe if parents want children to use cellphones responsibly, they'll need to lead by example. This means not using the cell phone in the car and turning it off at the movies or in restaurants.

In most cases, I agree with you, but in cases of afterschool activities, I can see the advantage of a 10-12 year and up child being able to call for when they are done, especially if it is uncertain how long the activity will last. But, if the schools will not allow the phones on the premises, then kids and parents don't have that option. As well, some of these phones are specifically designed to allow only one or two numbers to be dialed from the kid's phone. In that case, I might trust my kiddo with a cell phone. :)
