Barbara, You've made some compelling statements. Thank you so much for sharing your views!-Susie

Well, my daughters school went to uniforms 2 years ago now and let me tell you it does nothing!

1. They said it would improve attendence, and improve discipline issues - but the school does not even track these things so how would anyone know??

2. They said it would improve test scores but the reality is test scores have actually dropped by approx 6% when compared to test scores before uniforms - just as researchers in this field said would happen.

3. They said it would be more economical for families but how is having to buy two sets of clothing more economical for my family? Especially when I bought at thrift stores and resale stores and could purchase an entire outfir for my daughter for $5 to $7 compared to now when I have to spend that much just for one shirt now not to mention the $8 to $14 for the pants!!!!!

4. They said it would "level out the playing field between the haves and the have nots". How? The kids who whose families need the financial aid to get a uniform get just that, a uniform, ONE, that has to last the entire school year. That is now all they have to wear for the year regardless of how much they may grow or if they rip the knees out of their pants. A couple of months into the school year and you can definitely tell who the "have nots" are.

5. They said it will prepare our kids for when they enter the job market - our school is K-8! These kids are not going into the job market. They are going to high school where they will be ill prepared to cope with high school life because they won't even know how to dress themselves anymore or handle any of the social complexities that high school brings about. All they are actually learning is how to overcome the embarrassment of having go out in public and face your peers - the "haves" - with stained, ripped, tattered clothing that is too small for them to be wearing anymore.

6. They said it will make them behave better - but how does a child learn how to say No to peer pressure when during their whole school life they are taught that they must all be the same??

How does a child develop the fortitude to be able to say "no" even if they may be the only one at the party saying it?

Why do parents allow schools to teach their kids that they must be like everyone else, that they shouldn't be different, or be themselves, in essence to not say "no" and then sit around scratching their heads wondering why their child is a raging drug addict.

When did parents lose their right to parent their own child/ren - when did the school become the parent?

Parents need to step up and learn, again, to just say NO!

Hello Susie,

I'm Jana Blomme and I'm 15 years old. I live in Belgium, near France:-) I am a pupil, and for my English writing test, I had to read your website about the school uniforms and write this text. I was supposed to tell you how I feel about school uniforms and I had to tell you why I would like to wear a school uniform or why I wouldn't like to wear it. Well, my first thought was that I would not like to wear it, because I want to wear my own style. It's how I express myself, how I want to be. I wear casual clothes, because most of the time, I really hate fashion. But than I read your website, and I learned that your own style could lead to conflicts and harassing. So I really don't know what to think about school uniforms. I think I'd like it, because everybody would be dressed the same and there would be less conflicts between students. But I think most of the people wouldn't like to wear school uniforms, because than you can't express yourself and wear your own style. I think that the uniforms could fix problems, conflicts and harassing.

So thank you for your time and I wish you good luck with your webpage!

Dear Susie,

I am Veerle Meuwissen and I my school is Heilig Hart-instituut Heverlee in Belgium. I am 14 years old and for a school task we have to read your site. In case of the uniforms: I prefer school uniforms because then you can not say to anybody that he or she has ugly clothes because they all look the same. Of course they may not be old fashion. But the parents are also right by saying that they have to buy even more clothes. A friend of my has to wear a school uniform and she says that it is not so bad as all people think. Goodbye. Sorry for the bad writing. Thanks for listening. P.S. It is a lovely site.

Dear susie,

I'm Lieselot and I'm 14 jears old. I'm a student from Belgium and in our school we don't wear School Uniforms. I don't like school uniforms because it don't expresses your personality. Young people who like hiphop like to dress them like that. Then you look all the same. But it also has good reason, if no one is different, nobody can be bullied. That's what I think about it. Thank you for the article, It was very intersesting!!=)

friendly greetings from belgium, Lieselot

Hi Susie

Im Jozef, a 15 years old student at a school in Belgium. I think sometimes school uniforms are a good idea because some children could be bullied because of their clothes but the chance that students will be bullied because of their appearance will grow. On the other hand if you dont let them have their own style they would be very angry and maybe even start rioting or go to a different school. They would also pay much more attention to make-up and jewellery. Parents would be angry too because they have to pay the school uniform of their child plus the expensive brand clothes for in their free time.

Thanks for listening and greetings from Belgium, Jozef

Hey Susie,

Im annelies, Im fifteen years old and I study human science in the Heilig Hart Instituut in Belgium. I ve red the article on the internet about school uniform and Im very happy that I dont have to wear a school uniform because I want to wear my own clothes. I dont like it if people wear the same clothes. I know a friend who have to wear a school uniform. He goes to a very strict school and if you wear something of your own clothes, you have punishment .

Your article is really interesting and it was very nice to read it!

Hi Suzy,

My name is Marie Van Puyenbroeck and Im 16 years old. Im a pupil at a school in Belgium. I am of the opinion that school uniforms are stupid, cause when everybody wears the same clothes, you have no personality. I think also that schools uniforms are really boring, cause you always have to wear the same and afterwards its really annoying. I hope the rule wont come to Belgium, cause then I wouldnt like to come to school. On the other hand I think school uniforms are useful, cause sometimes you dont know what to wear and if you have to wear a uniform, there is no problem.

I wish you good luck with your site. See you soon Greetz Marie

Hello Im Sophie, Im 15 years old. I am a student in a Belgian school in Heverlee. Here in Belgium there arent mutch schools with a uniforms. Our school has no uniform but there are rules on clothing. One of these rules are that we may not waer short skirts or tops. I dont think that school uniforms are that much of a trouble. I dont prefer school uniforms but I would not mind if we had. I also dont understand what people hate on school uniforms (unless the are ugly of course), they provide a unit and connect the people of the school.

I hope you can do something with my comment Greetings Sophie

Hello Susie, I am Dorien Vanheer and I am 16 years old. I live in Belgium. The reason why Im writing you is because we had to write a comment about school uniforms. Personally I would not like to wear a uniform. I really like to chose my outfit when I go to school ,it is a way to express yourself ,to be unique. But on the other hand Im also pro for the school uniforms. It can be difficult en stressing to choose clothes that are in fashion and it takes a lot of time in the morning to get ready for school. But a school uniform can be good because everyone wears the same en nobody can be bullied because they wear the wrong clothes. So I really dont know what to think about school uniforms. It is a tricky subject that causes a lot of discussion! Thank you for your time and have a nice day

Dear Susie, Im Julie Vinckx and Im 14 years old almost 15. I go to school in Belgium and I really like to drop my comment on your site. If I would go to a school in Britain I wouldnt like to wear a uniform because its very absurd. But its better for your safety, because some people have other intentions. I think that this site is important because everybody can drop his opinion. But I wouldnt want that the line come over in Belgium cause I think that I wouldnt like to go to school. But its time to go now, I wish you good luck whit this site! See you soon! Greats Julie.

But I think it is not so good because than you not can see how you really are. I am happy that we don€t have a uniform but that is my opinion. Maybe are there other people that is find is good. Hi Susie, My name is Elisabeth. Im a student from Belgium. Im really glad that I dont have to wear uniforms at school. Im against uniforms because I think its stupid that everyone looks the same. Its also really boring if everyone looks the same, because you cant see any difference about how the people are on the inside and outside. Then you cant recognize the people who has the same character as you. I also think its very stupid if you find your uniform ugly and you have to wear it every day, Than you wouldnt feel comfortable and you dont have much confidence.

Bye.

Hello Susie,

Hello im a student from a school in Belgium. I am 14 and a half jear old. I like writing letters or comments in English. Sorry but I dont like uniforms cause we dont wear uniforms in Belgium. I will not wear a school uniform cause that is just to schools. I think everybody must wear what they want, if the schools say that student MUST wear uniforms than they cant wear what they want. I think that students need to chose what they wear cause they feel more comfortable. Maybe school uniforms would be much more expensive than normal clothes. And maybe they wouldnt be as nice as normal clothes. Its important to feel good and I wouldnt feel good in a uniform. In the past students wear school uniforms cause is it must and it was normal. We do not live in the past. Things change.

Thank you for reading my comment. Have a nice day. Nik

Dear Susie,

Im 15 years old and I study in Belgium at HeiligHart“ instituut Heverlee. Im not against school uniforms but dont really want to wear them. Youre clothes express yourself. Everyone would be the same in a school uniform. I associate school uniforms to with private schools. It would be useful because you dont have to think what to wear but you dont get a chance to express yourself in those clothes. You have your own style and wear clothes you like in that style. I would not have a problem with it if our school wants us to wear uniforms. We wear uniforms for LO and thats good. I dont know people who wear uniforms at there school but my friend wants to wear uniforms because its useful if you dont have to think about what to wear and shes right. I hope you can read it all because I'm still learning English.

Bye and thanks for listening ana¯s

Hello, Susie1506 My name is Itse Brik© and I come from a school in Belgium. Here in Belgium we dont have uniforms. I liked this text, because now I look different against school uniforms .It gives a lot of information about school uniforms. But still I dont want to wear a school uniform ,because your clothes are your identity .I think that with a school uniform less people would bully ,because then there are not so much reasons to do it. Maybe I would like it when the school uniforms are more like the clothes of this century. The clothes mustnt be expensive ,because in this economic crisis, the people wouldnt give there money at a school uniform. Thank you for writing this text. Goodbye Itse

Hello Susie

Im a Belgian student and Im 15 years old. I just red your article about school uniforms, and I would like to Give mine opinion about it. I wouldnt like to wear a uniform and these are my arguments. I think everybodys different and dresses different . And if we all would wear the same clothes nobody could be who he is. My best friend has to wear a uniform, she can only wear what she wants in the weekends . But theres one day in the year than they can wear what they want . Than you can finely see what your friends like to wear. I cant find something positive about school uniforms. But I really liked your article. Goodbye .

Hey i am Jelena Corbeels,

I think its pretty good wearing uniforms on school. Because than is everybody the same, so you cant bully people for there clothes. But on the other side it can be very stupid because you cant wear youre own clothes. They believe that school uniforms improve student attendance. I think thats true because you dont give most of youre time on clothes and stuff like that but more on study, doing things for school. They also believe that uniforms dictate a stricter atmosphere and that students who wear uniforms are more likely to follow school rules. I think that can be true, everybody is the same when you wearing an uniform. It think that because wearing an uniform the people are more social on school, because you dont have to be afraid for the reaction from people on youre clothes. But acutely I prefer to wear my own clothes on school.

Goodbye

Hello Susie, Im Bieke Cappuyns. Im 14 years old and a pupil in a school in Belgium. The name of my school is Heilig Hart. The reason why Im writing you is because we have to do an exercise for our final exams. I dont think Id like to wear an uniform because you cant choose your own clothes. On the other hand I think its smart from schools to use them. The other pupils cant judge you on what you wear. You dont have to worry about what they are going to think of you. Then you can focus more on your schoolwork and less on your outfit.

Goodbye, have a nice day!

Hello Susie,

Im Sanne Tollebeek and Im 14 years old, almost 15. Im a student from Belgium and I go to the HeiligHart-Instituut witch is in Heverlee near Leuven. I dont really have an opinion when it comes to weather wearing or not wearing a school uniform. On the one way I would love to wear one, but on the other way I rather not wear a school uniform because I would love to wear my own cloths. Ive seen pupils wearing a school uniform and I think it looks pretty nice. But I know someone how has, a sort of, a uniform and she can only wear the colours white and brown. When I heard this I was glad that Im not at that school and that I can wear the cloths or colours that I want.

I thank you form righting this article it was very informative. Goodbye.

Hi,

I am Pierre from Belgium and I am 15 years old.

I think its good to wear uniforms because it reduces the chances of bullying because in our society its important how you are dressed. I would like it if we had to wear uniforms and it would be fun , everyone would be the same and there would be no difference between the pupils. I think its cheaper to buy uniforms because brand clothes are really expensive. But on the other side its not so good because the pupils can not have their own style.

Thank you for listening, greets from Belgium

Hello Susie,

My name is Valentine , I am 14 years old and I go to school in Belgium in Heverlee. I wouldnt like to wear an uniform because they are often not very beautiful . And its almost always in a dark color . I prefer to wear my own clothes so you can show youre own style. When you are new to school you can easier recognize people. Because some people have a particular style and than you remember this. But sometimes its good to have an uniform. Some children are bullied because of their clothes. And when you have an uniform everybody is the same. Thank you for this interesting article.

Goodbye ,

Dear Susie,

I'm from a school in Belgium, in the west of Europe. I dont like school uniforms either because there's no fun if you can't choose what to wear. Students should choose it or they will become sad or even depressed. They'll also feel prisoned in school and wouldn't pay attention anymore. So they would get better points and would be more happy if they shouldn't wear a uniform. That's my opinion,

Goodbye and thank you, Tom

thank you so much for making up this article on this topic of against school uniforms, I go to a school that doesn't have uniforms and Im glad for that, because I don't like the stress of other kids saying, "Oh this person looks so bad in this piece of clothing" and my parents agree that school uniforms are a waste of time. I wouldn't be able to concentrate in school if we had uniforms, uniforms issolate the act of being unique through freedom of clothing expression, and along with the stairotypes. Thank you. ~Allie~

Uniforms are not the best choice. but, some schools do need it. yes, I'm totally against uniforms. but don't judge uniforms right away. Some schools do need them for school shootings, or fighting. you can even get a better academic grade just by having one week use of uniforms. Think about it! :)

I think school uniforms are not necessary b/c kids need to express themselves the way they need to. Plus they need to feel comfortable with what they r wearing, or they might not be able to be good in school. There would be a lot of yelling, rebellion, and too many new attitudes! I say no uniforms!!!!!!!!!!

Alaina, School can be difficult at times, but you need to understand that you aren't alone in your feelings. I promise it will help if you talk to someone face to face. If you don't want to talk to your parents, talk to a trusted teacher, school counselor, etc. about how you feel. Hang in there. I know it seems as if these years will last forever, but they won't! -Susie

Students should not be required to wear school uniforms. The clothes kids wear these days express who they are. School uniforms WILL NOT decrease the amount of violence and bullying at the school. People can find other reasons to bully someone. And, like Emily R. said, kids are going to need clothes to wear outside of school. Buying clothes for them to wear outside of school and a uniform can be quite expensive.

-- Contributed by: Jackie R.

dress code is stupid they should get ride of it!!!!!!!!

-- Contributed by: Pam

Come on. what is the real reason for school uniforms? Is it so the kids wont do anything bad? or is it just a way to control them? Kids especially teens are going to find a way to do want they want. If they wear uniforms there going to make it there own and they will still get in trouble. So my question is why wear school uniforms?

-- Contributed by: Elizabeth Cardenas

uniforms jus make schools worse

if their worried about kids who dont belong to the school getting in then give the kids who do come to the school like a pin or a card stating that they come to the school or something like but uniforms come on honestly

-- Contributed by: I-soro

kids i think are acting out more w/ uniforms because they think it is a way to rebel and i also would think that it takes away student creativity and they do not have a chance to exspress themselves in the right way

-- Contributed by: hannah w, erin h, icel h

School uniforms are so stupid! Why where them? i no some kids are richer then others and may have nicer clothes but that doesnt mean there should be uniforms. UNiforms cost a lot. Even after school is out kids aren't going to go and play or go to the mall in there uniforms, there still going to need clothes outside of school.
