Who is SpongeBob SquarePants?

Ask any kid over the age of five, "Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?” and just about every single one of them will know the answer: SpongeBob SquarePants. Ask any adult, on the other hand, and most will respond, "Who lives in a what?"

SpongeBob SquarePants is a cartoon character who has taken the world by storm. A telesvision fixture since 1999, SpongeBob is a silly, goofy, hardworking, and lovable yellow sponge who can make just about anybody giggle.

The Characters

The cast of the SpongeBob show consists of seven characters who live, work, and play together - and always find themselves in strange yet hysterical situations.

SpongeBob is the show's main character. As anyone who has heard the show's theme song knows, he lives in a pineapple under the sea. His roommate is a snail named Gary, and SpongeBob flips burgers for a living at the Krusty Krab restaurant.

Patrick the starfish is SpongeBob's best friend. Patrick, who is not the brightest of characters, is always getting himself and SpongeBob into various troublesome situations.

Squidward is a co-worker of SpongeBob's. He's usually in a bad mood and he always seems to be annoyed.

Mr. Krabs is the owner of the restaurant where SpongeBob works. Mr. Krabs is very money-oriented and he loves the fact that SpongeBob happily works in his restaurant for a miserly salary.

Sandy Cheeks is the only character on the show who cannot live in the water without an oxygen tank. She's a dare-devil squirrel who loves participating in adventures with SpongeBob.

Plankton owns a restaurant called the Chum Bucket, which competes with the Krusty Krab for customers.

Gary is SpongeBob's pet snail. SpongeBob loves Gary with all of his heart and Gary is a benign character who is very loyal to his owner.

SpongeBob Movie

Because SpongeBob and all of the other funny and entertaining characters in his show have such a huge fan base, a SpongeBob SquarePants movie was released in November of 2004. The movie has a simple title: The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, and it was written by the same person, Stephen Hillenburg, who created and writes the SpongeBob SquarePants television series. The film is rated PG, and has been nominated for several awards.

SpongeBob Fan Club

The SpongeBob SquarePants Fan Club has been around since 1999, the same year the show first aired on television. Members of the fan club can sign up to receive e-mail newsletters, be the first to know about new SpongeBob merchandise for sale, and be a part of numerous SpongeBob-related contests.

The SpongeBob fan club provides an electronic forum where fans can post their thoughts and opinions about SpongeBob. Being a member of the fan club is also a good way to be the first to know about what’s new with SpongeBob and when he is mentioned in the news.

Trivia Book Dedicated to SpongeBob

SpongeBob has become such a well-known and followed character that there have even been books written about him and the SpongeBob SquarePants show. The SpongeBob SquarePants Trivia Book, by David Fain contains all sorts of informational tidbits that many fans do not know. For any fan wanting to know more about SpongeBob’s life outside of his television show, this is a good and funny book to read. The book also quizzes fans with obscure trivia facts and "Who said this line?" questions.
