Shopping for kids' clothing is easy, but if you have to shop for slim size school uniforms, your selection may be limited. Not every component of the school uniform is made for a slim child. Shirts, jumpers and sweaters come in regular or husky/plus sizes. In only a few stores will you find pants, skirts and shorts in slim sizes. While this may be frustrating, it isn't impossible.

Altering a Uniform

While some regular-sized uniform shorts, pants and skirts may have adjustable waists, the ones that don't can be altered to make them adjustable. You need:

  • Buttonhole elastic
  • Two buttons that fit through the buttonholes in the elastic
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Safety pin

To make an adjustable waistband, make a vertical cut on the inside waistband of the garment at each side (by the hips). Sew a button on each side. Attach a safety pin to the end of the buttonhole elastic and weave it through the inside of the waistband, around the back until it comes out the other side. Cut the elastic to a reasonable size and adjust it to a comfortable for your child.

Used Uniform Sales

Check with your school's Parent Teacher Association or front office to find out if they hold an annual used uniform sale. Many schools hold this type of event to help raise funds, but it also allows parents to purchase slightly used, quality school uniforms at a reduced rate. Everything from jumpers and sweaters to skirts and shorts are available. Ask and shop early at these sales because the uniforms sell fast.

Family and Friends

Around spring break, start asking around to see if other families will be getting rid of their uniforms that are too small, especially if you know that their child wore a slim size. It doesn't hurt to ask, right? Even offer a discount price if they are willing to part with them. There are many benefits of school uniforms -- quality is one of them.
