From LoveToKnow Kids
Need a few rainy day activities for kids to help you and them survive the confines of your home? We're here to help! Check out our rainy day suggestions, and have some fun! By the way…you don't have to wait for a rainy day to try these fun activities!
Create Your Own Fun
Kids are so accustomed to instant gratification through TV programs, computer and video games, and other technology that it's hard to reprogram them to enjoy arts and crafts, board games, and other hands-on activities. While technology is good, it's just as important to get back to the basics of fun, and let children really use their brains and their creativity to construct a different kind of fun. Even if rain isn't in the nearby future, you can begin planning for those rainy days by collecting a variety of rainy day activities for kids and stocking up on the supplies you'll need. Then, when those raindrops begin to fall, you're ready to begin!
- Art box-Stock a large bin with a variety of art supplies, like glue sticks, pipe cleaners, finger paints, water colors, buttons, stickers, Play Doh, sequins, fabric paint, scissors, markers, crayons, material scraps, felt, lace, etc. Kids can create sock puppets, shoebox models, collages, and more with just a few of these art supplies.
- Kid recipes-Why not bake up some fun with a variety of kids' recipes? There are also kids cooking games for you and your child to enjoy together. The best part? Eating the results!
- Guessing games-Games like "I Spy" or "Twenty Questions" are simple to play. You don't need anything but your imagination to play these games. With "I Spy", start out the game by saying "I spy with my little eye something…." You'll then describe the item, and let the other players try to guess what it is. With "Twenty Questions", allow players to take turns asking you questions about the item you've selected until they figure it out or they use up their 20 questions.
More Rainy Day Activities for Kids
Once you begin collecting those rainy day activities for kids, you might be surprised at what all you can come up with. Here are a few other activities for you and your kids to try.
- Secret Handwriting-Challenge your kids to create their own language using a secret code that they create for letters of the alphabet. They'll need to create a key that could include numbers or symbols for letters. Then, have them write out a secret message for others to decipher.
- Beach party-You can have a beach party in the middle of your living room that won't be rained out. Add bags of rice to a plastic pool, and throw in shovels, buckets, and other sand toys. Play some beach music, dress in your swimsuits, and throw down a few beach towels for added effect.
- Bubble blast-Have a ball with homemade bubbles. The recipe is simple: mix two cups of dishwashing liquid in a pan with ¾ cup corn syrup and six cups of water. Create wands out of wire, clothes hangers, pipe cleaners, or anything else you can find that would be appropriate.
- Picture books-Gather together several old magazines, and invite kids to create picture books of their favorite topics. Cut out pictures, and glue them to construction paper. Then, bind the papers into a book by punching holes along one side and tying ribbons or stapling them to form a book. Picture books could feature your kids' favorite things, animals, hobbies, favorite places, or even favorite foods.
- Make a movie-Pull out your video camera, and invite kids to create a movie. If they really want to get into it, have them assign parts, write out a script, and find a few props. Then, let them rehearse their show a couple of times before you video it. Finally, pop some popcorn, and sit down to watch the feature show!
- Paper doll fun-Introduce the world of paper dolls to your little girl. If you don't have any on hand, make your own by cutting out people from magazines and gluing them to card stock. Then, cut out a variety of outfits for your little girl to play with as well.
