Why Use Charts for Behavior and Chores

Charts for Behavior

With our busy households, it's important that all family members know and understand what is expected of them. Behavior charts help parents and children keep track of whether they are behaving appropriately. In a situation where the child's behavior has changed dramatically, it would be very helpful for the parent to track when the change started and to see whether it can be linked to any other event in the child's life.

If you are trying to help the child learn to improve his or her behavior. using a chart helps both of you track his or her progress. The child can feel good about making positive changes and you can give him or her some positive feedback and a reward or making the changes you feel are are appropriate.

Use the behavior chart to track overall behavior or for a specific behavior pattern only. If something has come up that has become an issue for your child, you can use the behavior chart to track that behavior only. Other parents decide to use behavior charts to track behavior at certain times of day. If the child is having trouble staying on track in the morning or in the time leading up to bed time, use the chart to track behavior during those times.

Charts for Chores

In the case of chores, everyone in the household should be working together to keep things running smoothly. A chore chart is a simple way to for all family members to know which household chores they are expected to do in any given week. To be fair, rotate the chores as appropriate so that one person is not stuck doing something that they don't like.

The chore chart can be used to assign chores and also to keep track of whether the family member has completed them. You may want to offer the child a reward of some kind for doing his or her chores without needing to be reminded to do them. Place a sticker on the chart on days when this happens or make a note of some kind. Let the child know that they will get a treat or some extra privilege if the chores are completed properly by him or her independently.
