The Popularity of Princesses

Every little girl goes through a princess phase. If you were a tomboy, at first glance back into your childhood you may protest this statement. But even if you never got decked out in pink and flittered around the house waving your magic wand at your brothers and sisters, consider this - were you never a princess to your father or mother or grandfather and grandmother? Every little girl is a princess in some sense, which is what makes the whole idea of this role appealing.

Princesses are perceived in a little girl's mind as someone who is cherished and safe and secure. No wonder girls want to surround themselves with toys and costumes that would make them feel as such. And the toy industry is cashing in on this mentality. They are feeding off of the fact that little girls want to feel esteemed and important, and the parents are paying the money to encourage this.

Princess Barbie

Barbie, that compulsive job hopper, has had countless careers since her debut onto the toy scene. And playing the role of a princess toy is nothing new to her either. What is new in recent years is the Princess Barbie explosion. Dolls, books, backpacks, and even several DVDs all feature Barbie in the role of princess. Princess Barbie is the ruling girl of the Barbie empire, and little ladies everywhere are embracing the phenomenon. Her latest movie, Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses debuted this year.

Barbie has gone princess crazy, and with her, children have gone bananas for princess toys. Mattel is raking in the dough, and this holiday season there is sure to be a lot of pink under the tree. Some popular Barbie princesses include:

Disney Princesses

The recent princess phenomenon started where many toy trends start - with the mouse. Disney patented their popular princess line several years ago and it shows no sign of slowing down. Their staple five princesses, namely Sleeping Beauty (Princess Aurora), Snow White, Cinderella, The Little Mermaid (Ariel), and Belle from Beauty and the Beast, grace hundreds of pieces of different merchandise, and it's almost amazing that the children's industry giant can keep up with demand.

The Disney stores have large sections devoted to the princesses, and the theme parks sport specially dedicated princess stores. The auxilliary princesses (Jasmine and Mulan) also enjoy a large amount of publicity and popularity with the young set.

Disney loves their girly girls, and everything from Halloween costumes to Christmas DVDs are available to entice your little one. Some popular Disney princess toys include:

Other Toys Available

Beyond Barbie and Disney, there are many princess toys available. This year's popular line up includes:

  • Dora the Explorer Magical Castle
  • Disney Princess Enchanted Learning Leap Frog game
  • My Little Pony Crystal Princesses
  • Nintendo DS Super Princess Peach

Are Princess Toys Bad?

Many parents are strongly opposed to princess toys and work hard to discourage the love affair. Is it because of the annoyance and the drained pocketbooks, or is it because of a lack of a positive message? The former is most likely to be true as most of the princesses, be it Barbie or Disney, are surprisingly empowering.

The Disney gals from the golden age of animation all the way up to modern day film, tend to be quite assertive. Whether they spend their days bossing around seven dwarves or are cutting off all their hair in order to go to battle in their father's honor, these chicks don't mess around. They are delivering positive messages for young girls, encouraging them to go out there and be somebody.

So next time your little girl wants a princess toy, rest assured that it is more than likely harmless fun.
