PBS Kids Provides Quality Television

The Public Broadcasting System in the United States has a specific mission… to provide quality, cultural, and educational television shows to people of all ages, and PBS Kids plays a large role. PBS Kids is a division of PBS that works directly with the United State Department of Education to create television programming that can be used to help enhance a child's knowledge of specific topics, to encourage development of a child's social skills, and to ensure that a child is exposed to topics that will help him or her develop into a well-rounded person.

Entertaining and Teaching Kids

PBS Kids has been able to develop a unique way of entertaining children. While kids are enjoying the television shows, they are also learning about many topics and developing self-esteem.

PBS does not simply air new programs without going through test after test to make sure the programs will be good for a child's emotional and educational development. The network employs child development professionals who help to make sure that the programming that airs on is high-quality and age-appropriate. Programs are even "tested" on real kids before they're aired to the general public.

Television as a Babysitter

First thing in the morning, or right before the dinner hour, parents or caretakers may need a break to either get ready for the day or prepare dinner. Rather than listening to whining and crying, many times children are placed in front of the television. The choices of what to put on are countless, and many are completely uneducational and even violent in nature.

With PBS Kids' programming, parents usually do not feel as guilty having their child or children watch, since they know that the shows are wholesome, educational, and written specifically for children.

PBS Kids Sprout

PBS Kids Sprout is a television network that has a few different components. It offers child-oriented programming (such as Sesame Street and Barney & Friends) at all hours of the day, every day of the week. It is also part of "on demand" services that come with some people's cable or satellite television subscriptions. The network has an associated website that is filled with games and information for both children and parents regarding the programming.

Like the regular network, Kids Sprout airs programs that are appropriate for preschoolers. The two networks are partners and air some of the same shows.

Sesame Street

Sesame Street is a well-known and award-winning television show that has been airing on PBS since 1968. The groundbreaking program airs in over 100 countries in many different languages and teaches lessons not touched by any other children's programs.

Most people who currently have young children today can remember watching Sesame Street when they were children. The impression that the show leaves on children is an asset that cannot be matched by any other program.

Sesame Street airs on both networks on a daily basis.

Clifford

The television show, Clifford, is similar in nature to Sesame Street because it's main goals are to help children build relationships with people who may not look the same as them, learn to respect the feelings of others, and learn to work with others effectively to solve problems.

Clifford is another PBS Kids program that has a group of experts who work on the content of each episode to ensure that everything is appropriate for preschool children and that nothing on the show is deemed as offensive or controversial.

Other Resources

In addition to television programming, PBS Kids has an extensive website for parents. The site offers answers to common questions related to preschool-aged kids.
