Kids Halloween Games

Halloween Fun

Creating a successful Halloween party involves lots of planning, including plenty of activities, good food, and, of course, party guests. Don't just leave your guests to fend for themselves, however. Have a variety of kids Halloween games for them to play throughout the night. Before you instigate the activities, though, consider the following:

  • Ages of children-Be sure you select games that are age appropriate for your party guests. Young children may need adult assistance as they play, while older children may refuse to participate in anything they might deem too childish.
  • Know the rules-Don't try to figure out the game at party time. Instead, practice the game a few days ahead of time, so that you know how to play and what items are needed for the game. This will ensure that the activity you choose will progress smoothly.
  • Allow for plenty of time-Consider how much time you've allotted for the party, and plan accordingly. Allow enough time for guests to arrive and eat (if you plan on offering snacks.) Then, consider how much time will be needed to play each game. If you have a large number of guests, you might be able to have several games going at one time so that everyone can participate. If this is your plan, however, be sure and have someone who can manage each game.
  • Supervise, supervise!-Children can get very caught up in the momentum of a game, so be sure you have plenty of adult supervision for each game that is played.

A Few Kids Halloween Games

The following kids Halloween games are popular hits at Halloween parties and gatherings. Try them out at your next party!

Spooky Musical Chairs

This game is really an adaptation of musical chairs. To play this game, do the following:

  • Cut out spooky shapes of items, like black cats, ghosts, witches, etc., and tape to the floor in a circle or square. Each shape should have a number.
  • Allow enough participants for each shape.
  • Put on some spooky music, and have guests walk during the music.
  • Randomly stop the music, then draw a number from a box.
  • The person whose number is chosen wins.

Pumpkin Bowling

For this game you'll need 8 to 10 two liter drink bottles, and several small pumpkins.

  • Paint the soda bottles as ghosts or witches.
  • Add sand to the bottom of each bottle to create the bowling pins.
  • Set up the "pins", and let kids "bowl" with the pumpkins.

Build a Scarecrow Race

This is a fun game that encourages kids' creativity.

  • Gather the following items: long pieces of wood, sticks or brooms; sets of clothing; additional items, such as hats, gloves, shoes, etc.; straw, hay or some other material for stuffing.
  • Divide the kids up into teams, and give them enough materials to create a scarecrow.
  • Set the timer, and see who can create the best scarecrow in an allotted time period, such as 10 or 15 minutes.

Scavenger Hunt

You can vary this game to work with virtually any party. Create a list of items that kids will search for. These could be natural items, such as a funny-shaped rock, pinecone, blue bird's feather, oak leaf, etc., or you could hide items around the house or yard that are Halloween-themed, like plastic witches, ghosts, cats, monsters, etc.

  • Hand kids a list of the items. (For very young children, you may need to take pictures of the items, and give them cards with pictures on them.)
  • Hand out small bags or baskets for kids to use to store the items they find.
  • Give a signal to start, and watch kids race around the yard look for the missing items.
  • The first one to find all the items wins! (You can also let kids work in pairs if you prefer.)

These games are just a few of the activities that kids can enjoy at a Halloween party. Encourage kids to dress up for the party as well! Have fun!
