Family Fun
Remember sitting around the dining room table or on the floor of your living room playing kids card games like "Old Maid" and "Go Fish"? With the influx of electronics and technology in every home today, card games are often forgotten or looked upon as ancient relics not worth the time it takes to deal out the cards. Kids are so used to the fast-paced routine of computer and video games that they often turn up their noses and turn down the offer to play a good, old-fashioned card game.
While many of those computer games are educational as well, sometimes the slower pace of a card game actually lets kids savor the moment of spending quality family time together. Sure, you may have to coax them away from their favorite TV show or xBox game, but once you try some classic card games and learn some new ones together, you may find that your kids want to know when they can play cards again.
Examples of Kids Card Games
There are a variety of kids card games suitable for any aged child. Pair very young children with an older partner, so they don't get too frustrated.
The Classics
The following games are classics, and they still remain favorites among kids and adults.
- Old Maid-At least two players must play this simple game in which the object is to form and discard pairs of cards so that you aren't left with the odd card at the end. One queen should be discarded, making the deck an uneven 51 cards. Each player removes from his hand all matching pairs of cards, and then offers his hand, spread out face down, to the player on his left, who selects one card from it. This player discards any pair which may have been formed by the card drawn, and next offers his own hand to the player on his left. Play will continue until all pairs have been produced, and whoever is left with the odd card is the old maid.
- Go Fish-Up to seven cards are dealt one at a time to each player. (If more than three players are playing, deal only five cards.) Place the rest of the cards face down in a stack in the center of the table. The object of the game is to collect as many four-of-a-kinds as possible. There are different variations of this game, but basically, players ask the person to their left for a particular card. If that player has the card, he must hand it over. If he doesn't have the card, however, he should say "Go fish." In that case, the player must pull the top card from the stack in the middle. The player who uses up all his cards first wins.
There are many more classic card games, and the rules can be found at sites like Family Card Games and The House of Cards. For more information on classic games, check out the Family and Children's Board Game site as well.
