Choosing Kids' Bed Spreads

Choosing the best kids' bed spreads expends a lot more thinking, shopping, and planning than a person might originally believe. Creating a new look for a child's room requires preparation, including analyzing what type of bedspread a child will enjoy for an extended period of time.

The one essential question to be answered prior to selecting a bedspread for a child's room is, "will the room be decorated based on the look of the bedspread, or will the bedspread be selected based on how the room already looks?"

Selection Tips

In reality, kids' bed spreads are not only about appearance. True, a bed is a large item that sits in the middle of a room and the bed's covering is a main focal point, but there are a few other things to also consider about a bedspread.

  • Allergies can affect the type of materials appropriate for your child’s bedspread. Most bedspreads consist of a single layer made of cotton and/or polyester. However, some may contain a thin filling of down feathers between two layers of fabric. If a child is allergic to feathers, this can pose a big problem.
  • Focus on the correctly sized bedspread. There have been countless instances when parents and kids get fixated on a specific bedspread that is not the correct size for the bed at home. Sometimes, a store can order the correct size, or it might be in stock in another store. If it is the ideal theme, but the wrong size, shop around.
  • When matching a bedspread to a specific color wall paint or carpeting - do not attempt to match the color by memory! Colors have numerous shades, so it's easy to accidentally purchase a bedspread that almost matches the room, but ends up looking out of place. In order to avoid this problem, take a paint sample and/or a piece of the carpet to the store to be used for matching purposes. At the very least, make sure the store you buy the bedspread from has a good return policy.
  • Always read the washing instructions on a bedspread's label prior to purchasing it. The last thing a parent wants is Dry Clean Only bedding for a kid who is not yet potty trained. Kids are also notorious for eating, coloring with markers, and letting pets visit, all in their beds. Remember, kids' bed spreads will need to be cleaned frequently.

Be Creative

Unlikely as it may sound, one of the most creative types of kids' bed spreads is a solid colored one. A solid colored bed spread may seem boring initially, but it is just the item to spark creativity in kids and/or parents on how to decorate a room. Solid colored bedspreads allow the rest of the room to be decorated to the maximum. For example, curtains with busy patterns and matching pillows on the bed will make the room look professionally decorated.

Two Beds in One Room

If there are two beds in one room - a pair of twin beds, a set of bunk beds, or a trundle bed - should the bedspreads match? The answer is, "yes and no." Matching bedspreads can look balanced on two beds in a single room, but coordinating bedspreads can also harmonize. Coordinating, but not exactly the same, bedspreads allow two children that must share a room to select their own, unique bed coverings.

Keep Children Safe

Often, kids' bedspreads are pushed off the bed during the night, or left in a pile on the floor in the morning. This may seem innocent enough, but bedspreads can be hazardous if they are pushed into or against a hot nightlight or lamp in the room. If left touching a hot light bulb for long enough, the heat could potentially start a fire. Evaluate the position of the bed to various sources of heat in your child’s room.

Also double check any bedspread for attachments like strings or buttons that could either strangle or choke your child. This is particularly important with younger children who still like to put things in their mouths.
