Kids' Wall Murals
From LoveToKnow Kids
Kids' wall murals are a fun way to enhance the theme of your child's bedroom or playroom.
Kids' Wall Murals Defined
A mural is a painting done on the actual wall that fills a large area. Unlike a picture, a mural is permanent and cannot be moved from room to room. A mural can be a wonderful way to bring the room together in a unified theme.
Planning the Mural
Before painting a mural, decide where it should be placed. Murals take time and money, so plan accordingly. The mural will tie the theme of your child’s room together with his furniture and accessories. Shop around for his bed spread, throw rugs, pillows and furniture before starting the mural so you can visualize how the room will look when you are finished.
A mural can be as simple as a blue sky and clouds or more intricate like a farm theme with animals and a barn.
Wall Mural Themes
Your kids’ wall murals need to fit the theme of the room. Below are some examples of murals you can paint.
Nursery Rhymes
A baby’s room is perfect for a nursery rhyme theme. Paint a low brick wall with Humpty Dumpty swinging his feet. In the background include other nursery rhymes like the cat and the fiddle, and the cow jumping over the moon.
Out of This World
A common theme for older kids' rooms is a wall painting that features planets and stars. Add a rocket launching into outer space on the door. Consider placing glow-in-the-dark stickers on the ceiling.
Tea Party or Princess Theme
Little girls love a good tea party. Any princess pictures, flowers, or butterflies are perfect for tying in this theme. If you are focusing more on princesses, create a castle in the background.
Sports
Create a basketball, football or soccer mural behind your child’s bed. Find throw pillows and bedding that represent the sports theme. If you have a basketball theme, put up a hoop over his bed.
Painting
The most traditional way to create a kids’ wall mural is to paint one. If you are a talented artist, create the mural first on paper. Then draw it onto the wall with a pencil before filling it in with paint.
Image Projection
If you have access to a projector, create your artwork on a transparency. Then enlarge the image onto the wall. Use a pencil to outline the artwork and paint.
Stencils
If you are artistic but nervous about freehand art work, stencils can help you create the perfect mural. However, since you need to purchase all the stencils separately to complete the masterpiece, it can become expensive.
Paint by Number
Kids’ wall murals now come in paint by number. Paint your child’s room with a few easy steps:
- The pattern comes on transfer paper which you tape onto the wall.
- Take a pen and trace the pattern onto the wall.
- Remove the paper.
- Paint.
Wallpaper
If you are not an artist, you can find selections of kids’ wall murals on wallpaper so all that is required is to paste the paper and smooth it onto the wall. You can purchase a complete mural or individual pieces called cutouts that you paste on the wall.
If you go with a partial mural, paint the wall and let it dry before gluing it onto the wall.
Cutouts
Smaller wallpaper murals are easier to use than large wallpaper murals. Many of them come with a pre-treated back so all you need to do is dip the picture into water and smooth it onto the wall.
Stickers
Wall stickers are available in a variety of themes. These decorations stick on the wall without glue or water. Though convenient, they tend to fall off after time. Wall stickers make a great temporary mural.
Hire someone
If you want a kids’ wall mural but do not feel comfortable doing it yourself, hire a professional artist to create your child’s dream room. You can find an artist through one of the following ways:
- Searching online or in your phone book
- Calling a home decorator and asking for a referral
- Calling your local college art department
- Hiring a local artist or child’s illustrator
Kids’ wall murals can make any room into a fantasy.
