Choosing Kids’ Birthday Invitations

As you decide on your child’s birthday party plans, the first step is to invite the important people in your child’s life. Ask yourself the following questions to help you decide on the kids' birthday invitations you want:

  • How much am I willing to spend on invitations?
  • Do I want the invitations to match my child’s birthday theme?
  • How much time do I have to spend on the invitations?
  • How many people do I plan on inviting?
  • Do I want to make handmade invitations?
  • Do I want my child’s help creating invitations?
  • How much input do I want my child to have regarding the invitations?

Remember that less time consuming invitations may be more expensive and appear generic while more creative invitations might be cheaper and more personalized.

There are many different kinds of kids’ birthday invitations. Some of them are easy to create, while others require more imagination and time. Some are expensive, though helpful if time is an issue.

Printable Invitations

If you have a high speed connection and a good printer, you may wish to print out your child’s birthday invitations. Websites that offer free printable invitations include:

  • Kid Printables is a fun site that offers free and nice-looking cards. You cannot personalize these invitations, and after you print them out you will need to fill in the information. However, these cards are very economical and you should be able to find an invitation your child likes.
  • Family Internet has free and simple-looking invitation designs. Again, you will not be able to personalize these invitations and will have to fill in the needed information by hand. These invitations might be good for very young children who may not understand what a birthday party is or for older children who do not want a birthday theme.
  • Dtk-kids.com offers free printable invitations. Some allow personalization, though with most you will have to fill in the information by hand. These invitations are organized by themes, so your child’s birthday theme just may be covered by this site.

Packaged Invitations

These are invitations you can buy at Hallmark, Party America, grocery/drug stores and craft stores. These invitations are often a little pricey, and you will have to fill in the information by hand. Additionally these cards are sold in pre-counted sets, so you may have some invitations going to waste. However, many prepackaged invitations also come with thank you notes, an economical saver. On the plus side, you can usually pick up themed invitations while you pick up birthday favors, themed plates, napkins, and other party decorations.

E-mail Invitations

The cheapest, and perhaps the easiest way to invite people to your child’s birthday party is with e-mail. These require no imagination and very little work, especially if you have e-mail addresses already in your computer. In addition, you will not have to worry about postage, return address labels, or licking envelopes.

You can also use programs such as Evite to send free invitations. These invitations look professional and allow you to customize the message. In addition, Evite allows your invitees to give you their responses online, and lets you to manage your guest list online.

On the negative side of e-mail invitations, many people consider them tacky, lazy, and impersonal. Besides, not everyone has an email address.

Handmade Invitations

Handmade kids’ birthday invitations are the most personal, and can be very economical. Handmade invitations can be as simple as a piece of construction paper colored by your child or invitations made from pictures of your child. On the other hand, they can be as complicated as invitations written in calligraphy and tied with ribbons.

Creating Handmade Invitations

There are many websites that offer great ideas for handmade invitations:

  • PBS Kids Zoom offers fun ideas for invitations, including pop-up invitations and yarn invitations.
  • Michaels offers easy to follow instructions for creating invitations for your child’s birthday party.
  • Making Greeting Cards is a fun site that shows you how to create greeting cards. These greeting cards can easily be converted into invitations.

Buying Handmade Invitations

Some websites offer custom-designed handmade kids' birthday invitations. These invitations are not cheap, but they are beautiful. Websites that offer this service include:
