Kids Summer Fun Activities and Ideas

Before you make your summer plans, it's important to consider your children's interests. If you have more than one child, try to plan activities that each child in your family will enjoy. While of course you want to spend plenty of family time together, it is okay to allow for some individual time so that each member of the family can pursue his or her own unique interests. The following ideas will get you started.

Sports

Summer sports are always a great option, and there are numerous sports activities available for kids of all ages to enjoy.

  • AAU-the Amateur Athletic Union or AAU is a great place to begin. Your child can join an AAU team in a variety of sports. Many of these teams play year round and travel all over the country.
  • Recreational sports leagues-Most cities and towns have a recreation department which organizes sports leagues in a variety of sports, such as football, basketball, softball, baseball, tennis, and soccer. For a small fee, your child will typically receive some of the equipment necessary to play. These leagues usually range in age from four years old up to 18 years old.
  • Swimming-If your town has a public pool or you have a local YMCA, your child can spend the summer swimming. He or she may also be able to take swimming lessons, and if he or she is older, may be able to receive training as a lifeguard. For the avid swimmer, another option could include joining a swim team.

Outdoor Activities

Summer means great weather, and there are numerous kids summer fun activities to be enjoyed outdoors.

  • Camps-Whether your enroll your child in a day camp or send him off to a week or two week long camp, he may love the whole camping environment. If you aren't interested in the organized camping experience, however, why not pitch a tent in your backyard or a nearby park? Sing songs around the campfire, roast marshmallows, and even sleep out of your tent under the stars if the mosquitoes aren't swarming.
  • Neighborhood games-Why not organize some neighborhood games or a fun scavenger hunt? Ask other parents to take turns motivating and supervising the kids. You could end the week with a neighborhood cookout.
  • State parks-If you haven't checked out the state parks in your area, you really are missing out on an excellent resource that is full of opportunities for fun and learning.
  • Fishing-You don't have to be an experienced angler to enjoy fishing. All you really need are a pole, some fishing line, a little bait, and a lot of patience. Take your child fishing and create a memory that will last a lifetime.

As you can see, there are numerous activities that you and your kids can enjoy throughout the summer. Start planning your summer fun today! Also, don't forget about your local library. Most libraries host summer reading programs for free!
