IronKids
From LoveToKnow Kids
Michelle Payette, the director of IronKids, has been working with the organization since early 2008. She moved to Tampa, the world headquarters for Ironman, Iron Girl and IronKids, from Whistler, BC, a ski resort a future site of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. She has worked in the event production business for more than 12 years, primarily working and living in Asia. She took the time to talk to LoveToKnow about the benefits of participating in IronKids, a new youth triathlon series in which children compete in age-appropriate distances with an emphasis on fitness, fun, and safety.
Please tell us about IronKids.
IronKids is a new, youth triathlon series for kids ages 6 - 15 which consists of eight races across the U.S. Our mission is to inspire and motivate kids through the sport to live an active, positive and healthy lifestyle. The races provide a fun and active way to meet friends, set a goal and achieve it with the support of their family and other participants. IronKids races also consist of the IronFlix, a mini children's film festival, triathlon clinics and an interactive expo.
What do kids have to do to participate in this program?
The only thing item necessary for participation is to the registration process! Everyone is welcome, whether you are a beginner, novice or seasoned triathlete!
What ages can qualify to participate?
All participants must be at least 6 years of age and up to 15 years.
What are the expenses that parents should be aware of?
The only expense associated with the IronKids race is the entry fee. The entry fee is $50 per child; however, we have a 'family incentive' where the first child is $50, and the second and third child in the same family only pay $35 each. The mandatory equipment needed to do a triathlon are goggles and a swim suit for the swim portion, a helmet, bike and running shoes for the bike and run portion. A hat or visor is great for a hot day too!
Why should kids participate in IronKids?
IronKids is an excellent way to meet other kids involved in the sport and who care about living a healthy lifestyle.
- Through participation in the IronKids events, kids will learn training, stretching, racing and nutrition tips which are key tools for kids to keep healthy both physically and mentally.
- Triathlon is an individual sport which allows kids tests their abilities and celebrate personal achievement.
- Each child who crosses the finish line receives a finishers medal and a finishers t-shirt, keepsakes to remind him or her of his or her accomplishment.
What does competition really teach kids?
Healthy competition teaches kids about good sportsmanship, how to set, prepare and accomplish a goal and how to accept both winning and defeat. These are essential life skills that are needed to be positive and grounded through everyday life.

Do you have any more tips or advice you'd like to add?
