Holiday Games for Kids

Holiday games for kids should be centered around simply having fun. As you search for the perfect games to play, consider the following:

  • Who will be playing? Will you have a broad age range of party participants, or will the party be focused on a particular age group? Choose games that will work well for all those involved to ensure that players will have the most fun and to eliminate a sense of frustration.
  • What supplies will you need? Many games simply need a few inexpensive and/or common items, while others might need more elaborate supplies. Don't wait until the last minute to figure out your party needs.
  • Will the games need lots of adult supervision? If you are planning a party for a lot of kids, don't choose games that need lots of adult input unless you have plenty of helpers on hand!
  • How much time do you have? Do you only have a limited amount of time for kids to play the games? If so, you'll have to decide on whether you want to only incorporate a couple of games into the day or focus on several. Don't forget to take into account how long it will take to teach the game as well.

Fun Holiday Games for Kids

Try the following fun holiday games for kids. Most of these games can be adapted for any holiday, whether it is Christmas, Halloween, Easter, or Thanksgiving!

  • Piñata Fun-Piñatas can be filled with goodies. Then let kids take turns hitting the piñata with a stick until the piñata breaks. Older children can be blindfolded, but be sure you have an adult to monitor the fun so nobody gets hurt!
  • Treasure Hunt-This is a favorite among kids of all ages and is easily adaptable for any holiday. Create a treasure map that outlines your yard or whatever area that is used to host the party. Hide "treasures" in the area. This could be gold coins (imitation of course), small pieces of candy, or other inexpensive items. Hand kids paper bags that they can decorate if they like, and give them a signal to begin their treasure hunt.
  • I'm Thankful Game-This is a new twist on the musical chairs game. Place chairs in a circle with one less chair than there are players. Players take turns saying something they are thankful for, such as "I'm thankful for people with brown hair." Everyone with brown hair stands up and moves to an empty chair while the rest of the players stay seated. An adult will need to pull one chair away from the circle during the movement to eliminate one player.
  • Balloon Busters-Write instructions and questions on small slips of paper and put them inside of balloons. Questions could be based on historical events, trivia, etc. Instructions could be statements like, "Do five jumping jacks with your eyes crossed" or "Walk around the room like an elephant". Each participant must choose a balloon at random and answer the question inside. If he gets the question right, he stays in the game. If he misses it, however, he has to choose a balloon with an instruction inside, and he has to do what is instructed. If he does, he can stay in the game, but if he doesn't, he's out.
  • Holiday charades-This fun classic is easily adapted to suit any holiday. Create charade topics based on the holiday season. For example, Christmas charades could include favorite song and movie titles. Easter charades could focus on items associated with the season. Thanksgiving topics could include items that party guests are thankful for.

These are just a few holiday games for kids that your kids are sure to enjoy. Do you have a favorite game suggestion you'd like to see added? If so, let us know in the comments section of this article!
