Girls Summer Camp

From LoveToKnow Kids

Many parents send their daughters to girls summer camp each year. Summer camps are a great way to entertain your children for a few days or even a few weeks. Camps provide the opportunity for your daughter to experience nature, make new friends and build new skills. Whether you are looking for a new experience for your child or are sending her to camp for the first time, here are some considerations for girls summer camp.

Picking the right camp for your daughter is a big decision.

Benefits of Girls Summer Camp

When you send your daughter to summer camp you have a few different choices. Many camps are mixed gender camps where there are boys' and girls' cabins. Other camps are only for girls, and the entire camp has girls' cabins. Depending on your preferences, you may want your daughter to have a single sex environment during summer camp.

Sending a child to summer camp has many different benefits. Some of them include the following:

  • Exposure to positive role models – The counselors show good examples to your kids of how young people can take responsibility.
  • Learning how to take small risks – Summer camps are full of small challenges and activities that push your child beyond her normal boundaries. Activities like these help build confidence and new skills.
  • Building creative thinking skills – Outside of her normal surroundings, your child will be led to think about problems in new and different ways, which can build creative thinking skills.

There are many benefits to girls only camps:

  • Less distractions – If your daughter is a pre-teen or teen you're probably dealing with the "boys" issue at home. You can eliminate the distractions of the opposite sex by sending her to a girls only camp.
  • Comfort level – Some girls aren't comfortable around boys or their personality changes when the opposite sex around, which makes a single gender camp a better option.
  • More opportunities to make friends - With a girls only camp there are more girls for your daughter to make friends with.

Choosing the Right Camp for Your Daughter

Many parents start out with choosing a specific camp for their daughter. However, the decision of which camp to go to should only be made after you've thought about the type of experience you want your daughter to have. There are many different types of camps out there and all of them offer something a little different.

Here are some considerations you need to think about:

  • What is the purpose of your daughter's time at camp?- There are camps available for building specific skills, like dance or music, and there are camps that are just for enjoying nature.
  • What kind of experience would she be comfortable with?- Some children aren't ready for sleepaway camp and would prefer a day camp where they can come home each night.
  • What is your budget?- Multi-week camps are more expensive than single week camps, and day camps are cheaper than sleepaway camps.
  • Does your child have special needs?- There are camps that are accommodating to all types of special needs.

Different Types of Camps

As you start exploring girls summer camps, you'll notice that there are many different options out there. In addition to slight differences in cabin quality, number of cabins and mealtimes, the biggest difference between camps will be in their activities. The activities scheduled for a camp will have the biggest impact on your daughter's experience.

There are camps that are designed to help your daughter improve a specific skill during the summer. These camps are usually focused on dance, sports, music and art. Skill specific camps will help your child have the camping experience while also providing them with an improved skill set.

Other specific camps may focus on a subject at school, like reading or science. Still other camps will push your daughter outside of her normal day to day life with adventure training like rock climbing, backpacking and hiking.

Once you start to identify the experience you want your daughter to have, and the experience that she wants, you can narrow down your summer camp choices to suit your needs.
