Options in Girl Clothes

While many girls like unisex clothing such as jeans and knit shirts, other girls want feminine clothing, including skirts and dresses. They also enjoy sparkly or shiny trims and ribbons, as well as bright and pastel colors. For baby girls, parents and grandparents have the pleasure of selecting cute or stylish clothing for their little angel. However, as girls grow, so do their opinions and tastes. A girl as young as three years old may develop strong likes and dislikes when it comes to color, fabric textures, styles, and trims. Older girls are influenced by their peers and may put pressure on their parents to purchase the latest or most popular styles of the moment.

Budgetary Concerns

How can parents stay within their budgets and satisfy a young girl’s desire for specific clothing styles and labels? Consider involving your child in the shopping process. Even toddlers can select one favorite outfit or item from three that Mom or Grandma has pre-selected as suitable for both price and purpose. Older girls should be made aware of any price constraints on their clothing purchases. You might consider allowing a teenager to take control of her own clothing budget; nothing makes a young woman a good shopper like awareness of how much things cost and the finite size of her pocketbook.

Clothing for Baby Girls

Baby girl clothes should, for the most part, be comfortable and washable. Washable knits and stretchy fabrics allow easy movement without binding and are easy to care for. Baby girls quickly outgrow their clothes, so you’ll want to buy just a few fancy clothes for special occasions, knowing that they may be worn only once or twice. Hand-me-down, second-hand, and consignment store clothing in good condition are excellent options for babies, especially for that special outfit to be worn on a holiday or to a special occasion such as a wedding. Outlet stores like Carter’s and Oshkosh can provide some good deals in baby clothing. Moderately priced department stores like Mervyns, Kohls, Sears, JC Penney, Target, Walmart, and Kmart all provide washable play clothing at reasonable prices. Department stores like Macy’s, Bloomingdales, Nordstroms, Robinson-May, and others also have a good selection of kids clothing, but at higher prices. Watch too for sales and clearances at specialty stores like babyGap, Baby Style, and Gymboree; find out from store personnel if there is one day each week when new clearance merchandise is put out for sale. Also, some stores offer special deals to customers who have charge accounts with them and this can help you get extra savings.

Toddler and Preschool Girl Clothes

Toddler and preschool-aged girls need lots of sturdy play clothes. In the winter, jeans or slacks and sweaters or long-sleeved t-shirts make good play clothes. In the summer, shorts and t-shirts or tank tops keep the little ones cool while they play outside. Although these items are durable, they can be chosen in bright or pastel colors with plenty of appealing trims for “girly girls.” Although the growth rate of toddlers and preschoolers is slower than that of babies, this age group may outgrow special occasion clothes. Kids this age are harder on their clothing than are babies, so fewer previously-worn everyday clothes can be found in on-line auctions and in consignment stores, but these stores are still good sources for the special party dress or holiday outfit. Often these special occasion outfits have only been worn only once or twice. For play clothes, the same stores listed above for baby clothes also offer clothes for toddlers as well as some for older preschoolers. Add Old Navy, The Children’s Place, GapKids, and New Kids Clothes to your list of places to shop for preschoolers.

Clothes for School Age Girls

Girls in this age group are likely to be more tuned into style than their younger sisters and also subject to a great deal of peer pressure. To avoid disappointment and tears, you’ll want to make sure you involve girls in this age group in the clothing selection process. If you can’t afford the desired styles and labels, consider shopping at on-line auctions like eBay or at consignment stores. It may be possible to find the “right” jeans in good condition. Also, involve your school-aged daughter or granddaughter in careful shopping and bargain hunting. Oshkosh stores carry girls clothing through sizes 14-16. Moderately priced department stores like Mervyns, Kohls, Sears, JC Penney, Target, Walmart, and Kmart provide a wide selection of clothes suitable for school and play. Department stores like Macy’s, Bloomingdales, Nordstroms, Robinson-May, and others also have a good selection of girls’ clothes, but at higher prices; they can be good sources for special occasion clothes. Old Navy, the Children’s Place, and Gap Kids all provide a variety of girl’s clothes.

Teen Clothes

By the time most girls reach their teens, they want to shop in “adult” stores. Stores that focus on young juniors or department stores that have young junior departments have clothing that fits young teens’ developing figures. Larger girls can select clothing from the juniors and misses departments. By the teens, most girls are happiest choosing their own clothing with parental guidance. At this age, that guidance is crucial, because peer pressure comes heavily into play in making choices about clothing. A clear understanding of what is or is not acceptable to their parents and a voice in making clothing selections within the family budget prepares teen girls to make good buying choices throughout their lives.
