Fun Activities for Kids
Fun activities for kids can be entertaining as well as educational! Possible activities vary from indoor to outdoor fun. They teach children basic reading, writing, mathematical, social, and even technological skills.
Greeting Cards
Greeting cards are fun activities for kids. They can be made for all occasions: birthdays, Christmas, holidays, and thank yous. Cards can be made by folding a piece of construction paper in halves or fourths. Teach children where to write the greeting and where to sign the card. Provide stickers, markers, glitter, or pictures for children to use to decorate the cards.
Alphabet Foam Stickers
Alphabet foam stickers are fun activities that promote early literacy. Pull out the letters that make up the child's name. Tell the child to unscramble the letters to see what it spells. Teach children to line up letters from left to right in order to read the word.
Shaving Cream
Shaving cream can be used as a fun activity for kids. Spread a small dab of shaving cream on a clean surface. Children can use their fingers to write words or draw pictures in the shaving cream.
Sticker Patterns
There are several fun projects for kids using stickers. For example, children can create borders around their greetings cards or they can make patterns out of stickers. Start with two different kinds of stickers, such as a red and blue stars. Children can alternate the two colors to make a pattern. Once they've mastered a two color pattern, children can create more complex patterns using three or more colors as well as different shapes. Take turns creating patterns and guessing what should come next.
Computer
The computer offers endless fun activities for kids. There are numerous software programs and internet games for kids, but computer activities can also be as simple as teaching children to type on the computer. For example, teach children about the mouse. Show them how to point, click, and scroll down. Show them how to type their name onto the screen or change the color of the font. Practice typing other words with the children, such as mom, dad, dog, cat, the, is, etc.
Chalk
Move the fun outdoors and let children draw on the sidewalk with chalk. Encourage them to express themselves through pictures or writings. Teach them how to play hopscotch or tic tac toe.
Dress-up
Playing dress-up is a favorite activity that promotes creativity and imagination. Save old clothes or hats for the kids to use as costumes. Visit thrift stores to find fun dress-up pieces. Dollar stores also offer fun dress-up activities that won't break your budget. An interesting dress-up drawer or box can be a great springboard for play-acting, role-playing and pretending; young children love to create plays and shows for family audiences.
