From LoveToKnow Kids

‎What better way to pass a rainy day than with free coloring pages for kids? The day is bleary and dreary, or maybe it's too hot or cold to go outside. Your child is sick and tired of the same old television shows over and over, and you've watched his favorite Disney movie so many times that the DVD is warped. There's no need to feel desperate! One of the best ways to occupy your child's time and also build some fine motor skills is by having him color with crayons, marker, colored pencils or whatever art products you have on hand.

Educational Free Coloring Pages for Kids

There are many different printable themed pages online, such as Shrek, Spiderman and other cartoon characters readily available. Because these are easy to find, let's focus on coloring pages that will serve an additional purpose.

Kids love to color, and a great way to sneak in some educational activities is through activity pages that teach while allowing the child to participate in his favorite activity. For example, Tampa Electric in Tampa, Florida offers a manatee viewing area. Their online site features manatee learning aids, including a coloring and activity pages that will help your child learn all about manatees. Other educational coloring pages include:

  • Edupics.com offers many different educational pictures in a wide variety of categories. From agriculture, to public holidays, to history and space exploration, you're sure to find many topics to keep your child busy and learning new topics.
  • Kinderart.com has many free coloring pages that are instantly downloadable but also features many other art ideas and projects that you can try to chase away those rainy day blues.

  • Learn Safety tips while completing these coloring pages. Find out how to protect yourself in winter weather or what to do during an earthquake. It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words, and what better way to get the message across to kids about safety than by having your child color his own picture of how to react in an emergency.
  • Solar System Coloring Book features the stars and planets of our solar system. This is a complete coloring book, but you can print just a few pages, if you wish. In PDF format.
  • Food Safety coloring pages features information on avoiding bacteria and food safety guidelines.

Coloring Pages Supplies

While you can access the above pages for free, colored pencils and markets can be expensive. Your best bet for getting inexpensive|supplies is to stock up during back-to-school sales, even if your child is not yet in school. Purchase enough boxes of crayons to get you through the year while they are priced at .20 each, and you'll never have to pay out $3.00 for a box again. Different stores offer different specials, and you may still be able to find many on sale. If it is too late in the season to get back-to-school specials, then try to purchase from the least expensive retailers or visit stores like Big Lots or the dollar stores.

This activity will take that dreary day and color it up like a rainbow. Just a little research and work will teach your child that learning can be just as much fun as...well...coloring.
