Educational Kids' Software

Educational Kids' Software
The history of educational kids' software goes back many years. Software has been used for educational purposes since computers were first functional in this capacity, which actually began in the 1940s. Although primitive in comparison, computer programs during the World War II era allowed the military to develop educational flight simulators for war pilots during training.
Now computers are common, and just about every school in America has a few in every classroom. Therefore, educational software can be utilized by most kids on a daily basis.
Software in Schools
While most public schools worldwide have a few computers in every classroom, much of the equipment is old and cannot run complex software programs. However, some schools, usually private ones, do have more advanced computers that students fully utilize.
Nonetheless, even with old model computers, students are able to practice their reading and math skills using many forms of kids' educational software at school. Due to the exposure to computers at a young age, kids as young as five years old are able to turn on computers, put in educational disks, and start the programs on their own. Kindergarteners, in fact, are sometimes better at manipulating computers than their older teachers or parents!
More commonly, teachers are also using educational computer software to teach lessons to the entire class. Teachers can project a lesson from a computer onto a large screen so that the entire class can participate, or they can run a specific program simultaneously on numerous computers within the classroom. These types of programs, typically called, “classroom management software,” have allowed teachers to advance their techniques and abilities to a new level.
Educational Software at Home
Since a large majority of homes have at least one personal family computer, naturally children who are exposed to educational computer instruction at school will also want to continue learning at home.
Many brands of educational kids’ software are creative and entertaining, as well as instructive. When kids use them, they’re hardly aware that the software has two purposes: to provide entertainment and to teach kids concepts at or above their grade level.
Encyclopedias and Dictionaries on Disk
As little as fifteen years ago, when kids received homework assignments involving any type of research or references, mom and dad had to drive the child to the local library. Some families were lucky enough to own an expensive set of printed encyclopedias at home.
Now, because of advancements in educational kids’ software, kids no longer have to physically go to a library to do research for their school projects. Not to say that learning how to utilize a library is insignigicant. In reality, it is essential that kids know how to navigate both a physical library as well as educational computer software.
Today, it is simple to either purchase a CD-ROM version of the Encyclopedia Britannica or accessed mini versions online, with an option of obtaining longer and more detailed entries by paying a fee.
Dictionaries are also available on a CD-ROM, but these are becoming more and more unpopular as most definitions can be easily found by searching via Google, Yahoo, or visiting numerous dictionary websites.
