Discount School Uniforms

From LoveToKnow Kids

Regardless of which side of the fence parents and children stand on the school uniform debate, parents will want to find discount school uniforms if their children attend a school with a uniform dress code. Because children often dislike the uniforms and may rarely wear them outside school, parents will want to spend as little as possible making sure their attire conforms to the code.

Purchase gently used school uniforms from family and friends at a discount.

Used School Uniforms

Healthy kids often grow at a rate that amazes their parents and empties their pocketbooks as they try to keep them in clothing that fits. When shopping for school uniforms, consider shopping for gently used uniforms. They are often deeply discounted compared to new uniforms and may only have been worn a few times.

Places to look for used school uniforms include:

  • Garage and yard sales within the district lines
  • Consignment stores in the same city or neighborhood
  • Saving older siblings uniforms for youngsters who are not quite ready for the size
  • Hosting a clothing swap with other moms and families in the area, including kids uniforms

Though buying used uniforms is a great way to save money, there are a couple caveats parents should know. Second-hand uniforms may be available because the district changed the dress code, so always shop with a copy of the current guidelines. Clothes may also have a few stains or be fraying at the bottom, so look them over closely, especially those at garage/yard sales.

New Discount School Uniforms

Even if kids are in the same size as they wore last year, they still may need a few new items to freshen up their wardrobe. Launderings can wear fabric out and cause pills, frays and fading. Luckily for parents, the cost of school uniforms for boys and girls’ school uniforms can be driven down by using three simple shopping tactics.

  1. Shop online and use a discount coupon code to save a percentage off a purchase. Websites like RetailMeNot.com and MyRetailCodes.com offer coupons for popular uniform retailers.
  2. Consider purchasing uniform staples at discount stores like ABC Kids School, Walmart and Kmart. Combine with an online code to get free shipping or an additional savings off the all ready cheap price.
  3. Purchase uniforms on clearance and end-of-season sales for the upcoming school year. Long-sleeved collar shirts will often be on sale in the spring, while shorts and skirts will be on sale in the fall. Pick up clothes in the next size or two up, depending on previous year’s growth rates. Save tags and receipts in case they do not fit.

Before shopping for new uniforms, make a list of what needs replacing. Discard clothes with rips, tears, frays, missing buttons and obvious stains. Replace a few key items, such as khaki pants and white shirts, which are prone to showing wear. Creating outfits with just one new article of clothing will make kids feel as if they have a new wardrobe, even if only a couple shirts and pants were purchased.

Uniform Manufacturer and District Agreement

School districts may have an agreement with a uniform wholesaler, offering discount school uniforms to parents and children who attend the school. Catalogs may be sent home at the end of the year or be available at registration.

In districts where agreements with a manufacturer have not been made, parents can lobby the school to look into the idea. Create a presentation for the school board by doing the following:

  • Getting other parents to sign a petition asking that the board consider making an agreement with a uniform wholesale company
  • Finding other local districts who already have an agreement in place
  • Looking up companies that would be interested in creating a partnership with the district
  • Presenting a short argument in front of the board regarding the pros of having a uniform agreement

Districts that have a uniform policy in place already recognize the benefits of school uniforms. They may be open to hearing ideas that offer parents a more affordable way to adhere to the guidelines listed in the student handbook.

Although the pros and cons of school uniforms are debatable, parents who live in a district with a dress code that includes a uniform must buy their children the proper clothing. With the rising costs of children’s education, parents should shop for discount school uniforms to save money that is better spent elsewhere.
