Discount Kids Furniture
From LoveToKnow Kids
With the rising costs of everything, many parents choose to save money by buying discount kids furniture. So, where can you look for cheap furniture for your kid's room-- and should you buy it?
Cheap or Discount Kids Furniture?
Of course we've all heard that you get what you pay for. That is often true if you buy dirt-cheap furniture. Note that there is a huge difference between cheap furniture and quality furniture at discounted rates. Cheap furniture is often just that-- cheap. It is usually sloppily put together, and made of poor materials.
Discount furniture is simply furniture that is offered at reduced rates. If you can find high-quality, name brand furniture at a deep discount, that's being a savvy consumer. Buying cheap furniture, on the other hand, is a bit riskier.
Considerations in Cheap Furniture
Before you spend your hard-earned money on cheap beds, dressers, or desks for your kid's room, there are a couple of things to think about:
- How long does the furniture need to last? If you are looking for furniture to grow with your child, cheap is probably not the way to go. Quite often, a rock-bottom price reflects poor quality and lessened longevity. If the furniture will need to be replaced every year, you're better off spending a little more up front.
- Is the furniture safe? Regardless of price, you should always consider the safety of the furniture. Is it sturdy enough to withstand the normal wear and tear of growing kids? Even the most well-behaved children occasionally abuse their furniture, and all kids' furniture should be able to stand up under pressure.
- Does the company offer a guarantee? Most higher priced furniture comes under warranty. If the furniture breaks, the company will usually repair it or offer a replacement. Make sure your furniture is covered under a similar policy.
Finding Cheap Furniture
Cheap furniture is available at many department stores. In addition, you can find it at:
- Thrift stores
- Garage sales
- Flea markets
- Roadside furniture markets
Finding Discount Kids Furniture
You can often find brand name furniture at deep discounts. While this option costs a bit more than flea market fare, it is usually a better buy in the long run. Many of the well-known kids furniture manufacturers discount their products at the end of the season to make room for the new merchandise. In addition, many also offer "scratch and dent" sales, where they sell slightly damaged or mismatched furniture at drastically reduced prices. Many times the damage is something indistinguishable, such as a small scratch on the back of a dresser.
Although garage sales and thrift stores are often good places to find cheaply made furniture at low prices, you can sometimes find great deals on high-quality furniture, too. Many people choose to have garage sales when they upgrade to new furniture. Since some buy new every couple of years, you can often find furniture in like-new condition. When buying from a garage sale, make sure you inspect the furniture carefully before purchase, as there are usually no refunds given. The best time to find high-quality furniture at garage sales is just after Christmas.
