Museum Exhibits
The Tyrrell Musem located in Alberta, Canada, has been recognized as having one of the top dinosaur exhibits in North America. The museum includes a huge "dinosaur hall," which contains approximately 40 complete dinosaur skeletons on display. Every summer, a team sets out to find new fossils to add to Tyrrell's collection, and now they boast over 120,000 different specimens. The museum is named after Joseph B. Tyrrell, who discovered the Albertosaurus – named after the fact it lived right in Alberta – making it neighbors with Tyrrell.
The Field Museum of Chicago is a great mid-West museum option, as it is home to Sue, the world's most complete and preserved T-Rex. The museum even offers museum sleepovers.
Other great places to see dinosaurs:
- The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History
- Houston Museum of Natural Science
- Denver Museum of Nature and Science
Dinosaur Websites
Today's kids find knowledge online much more frequently than previous generations. Teachers are more likely to encourage them to research on their home computers than to dig through a pile of outdated reference books, and so it is helpful to know where to hunt for the best dinosaurs on the Web.
Dino Buzz is a great website that older children will enjoy. It contains dinosaur current events, as well as an encyclopedia-style reference guide.
National Geographic hosts a bizarre dinosaurs page, where kids can view facts and photographs of a few dinos they may not have heard of. T-Rex and Velociraptor usually steal kids' hearts, but now the underdogs of the dinosaur world are featured for children to explore and learn.
Lastly, Prehistoric Life is a website hosted by the BBC, providing kids both stateside and overseas with dinosaur information and the latest updates.
Where to Buy Dinosaurs for Kids
Dinosaurs are so popular with little ones, that many stores have popped up across the country to provide products to capitalize on that interest level.
Dinosaur Superstore is one such business, selling all things prehistoric from commemorative coins to interactive bath toys. Spike the Ultra Dinosaur was recently released by Fisher Price and is a lot of fun for younger children. Standing "tall" at 27 inches, you can use his accompanying remote control to make Spike growl, snort, light up and roar. Spike is recommended for children aged 3 and up, but take caution with the younger set – Spike can be a little intimidating.
For a reptile a bit sweeter and friendlier than Spike, check out Kota the Triceratops by Playskool. Big enough for preschoolers to actually ride, Kota features realistic sounds and movements that will send your child on an amazing dinosaur adventure.
The Discovery Channel store also features dinosaur products for older children, as well as plenty of books and videos to expand their knowledge base.
Dinosaurs for kids come in all different forms, from playful to educational. If you have a dino fan in your house, take advantage of the opportunity to encourage his growth and interest in a topic that is truly legendary.
