About Digital Cameras for Kids

Children can derive a plethora of benefits from using a digital camera. Not only are they mastering technology skills that will surely be a part of their future, but they are also honing other skills as well. Small motor coordination, concepts of time, responsibility, and added self-confidence can be garnered from allowing the child the freedom to explore their world through photos.

Digital cameras for kids are generally built to be more durable and withstand the abuse they are likely to take. Kids' cameras usually have lower resolutions, and many inexpensive versions lack the LCD preview screen on most standard digital cameras. They may or may not contain memory cards (also referred to as expandable memory). Many versions have resolution options, come with photo-editing software, and may have extra options such as video clip capabilities.

What to Look For

Although there are a variety of digital cameras for kids in today's marketplace, choosing the right one can be difficult. Just as with standard digital cameras, there are varying levels of quality.

Age-Appropriateness

First, look at the age of your child to help determine an appropriate style of camera. For younger children, very sturdy cameras are designed with the bumps and bruises of toddlerhood in mind, such as Fisher Price Kid Tough Digital Camera or One Step Ahead Kidz Cam.

For older children, slightly more sophisticated models are available, such as:

Although most digital cameras come with recommended age ranges, your child may differ as an individual, so be sure to access his or her personal skill level when selecting a camera.

Mega Pixels

Pixel counts determine the picture quality of your photographs; they generally range from under 2.0 to over 6.0. The more mega pixels a digital camera has, the better the picture quality. Unfortunately it also increases the price. Most digital cameras for kids have less than 3.0 mega pixels. Your choice will vary depending on the age of your child and how interested s/he is in getting good quality photos.

Digital camera experts suggest that 3.0 mega pixels is good middle ground for decent photo quality and price. For young children, less than 2.0 mega pixels should be adequate. Older children may be more interested in capturing clear photos, and you may want to go for a slightly higher range if it's within your budget.

Preview Screens

One of the biggest advantages in digital cameras is the ability to instantly preview your photos -- and delete and retake them should need be. Unfortunately, many digital cameras for kids don't offer this option. As with the number of mega pixels, a preview screen may not be an issue for a very young child, but older children may be disappointed with a camera that doesn't offer this convenient option.

Memory Cards

This is another feature you may want to consider. Memory cards, expandable memory, or memory slots allow you to store photos on the card rather than on the camera itself. This is not only convenient, but allows for added photo capacity as well.

How Much to Spend

How much to spend on a child's digital camera will depend on the quality of the camera and the features you'd like it to have. You can find digital cameras for children as low as $20 to over $100. There are also a number of inexpensive cameras that are not necessarily designated as digital cameras for kids that still work well for children, such as the Kodak Easy Share C310 camera with 4.0 mega pixels. At just over a hundred dollars, the price is also feasible.
