Should Kids Use Computers?

As with most things related to child development and parenting, there are no clear-cut answers as to whether or not children should use technology. The issue of computers for young children is particularly polarizing, as each side feels passionately about their stance.

Pros

Many educators and politicians whole-heartedly endorse the use of computers by kids. In fact, most American public elementary schools have at least one computer per room. Even preschools have gotten in the act, and computerized classrooms are now a major selling point for daycare centers.

Proponents claim that early exposure to technology helps increase reading skills, math skills, and overall academic ability.

Cons

Others, including proponents of Waldorf education and the Alliance for Childhood, believe that early exposure to computers can actually be harmful to children. Their reasons include:

  • Computer use diminishes social skills as kids interact more with the screen and less with people.
  • Money spent on computers could be spent on more important classes, books, and school supplies.
  • Technology can make children less creative.
  • Typing and clicking expose children to repetitive stress injuries.
  • Computer screens can cause eye strain.
  • Inactivity leads to health problems and obesity.

Opponents of early technology also point out that parents and teachers can become complacent about education, allowing the computer to teach. Even proponents agree that computers should never be used as the sole source of education. Instead, they should be a supplement to the existing instruction.

The Bottom Line

As with so many things, this is a personal decision. Still, with the ever-increasing use of computers in school, it would be difficult to completely restrict your child's use of technology. A moderate approach is likely the best solution. Allow your children to use the computer occasionally, but do not let it to become an obsession.

Computers for Kids

If you do decide to buy a computer for kids, buy one designed especially for children. Simply buying an adult keyboard or mouse with Dora the Explorer or Spongebob Squarepants decals is not the same as buying a kids' computer! Children have special needs, and adult-sized computers just do not accommodate growing bodies. The following sites feature computers and accessories made just for kids:

Computer Safety

Once you have made the decision to allow your children to use computers, you will need to take precautions to ensure their health and safety, both online and off. We recommend:

  • Use an ergonomic kids' desk.
  • Observe recommended age ranges on all software and computer games.
  • Limit your children's time on the computer.
  • Make sure your children balance their time on the computer with time in motion.
  • Never allow your children to use the Internet unsupervised.
  • Teach your children to never give out private information over the Internet.
