Purpose of Chore Worksheets for Kids

Why use chore worksheets for kids? There is a variety of reasons. For many families, kids need a bit of motivation in order to complete their chores in a timely manner. Chore worksheets will encourage your child to complete each task. As he marks off the chore he’s completed, he can visually see that he is one step closer to his goal. The goal may be as simple as a good feeling in accomplishing everything he was supposed to do, or it may be an actual reward, such as a trip to the movies, a video game rental, or a favorite ice cream treat.

Sometimes, simply putting a chore worksheet up in your child’s room or on the refrigerator will eliminate the need for nagging your child to do his chores. With families rushing in a hundred different directions every day, it’s good to get in the habit of being organized. In fact, why not start a chore worksheet for everyone, including you and your spouse? You can show your child that you need to be organized, too!

Worksheet Options

As you create or search for worksheets that will work best for your family, consider the following options:

  • Team Worksheets-These sheets are actually geared towards several kids who work together as a team. If you have a large family, you might want to let kids work in pairs or groups to accomplish chores around the house. A team worksheet is especially useful for those big jobs that need more than one pair of hands.
  • Weekly Jobs-A weekly job worksheet might work best for your kids. This means that each week you post new jobs, rotating the duties from one child to another, so that your kids don’t get bored doing the same jobs, week by week. Of course, if your kids are spread out in age, this might not work, since the younger kids may not be able to do the work that the bigger kids can do.
  • Self-Assigned Responsibility Sheets-Instead of assigning specific jobs to your kids, let them feel a sense of ownership by allowing them to choose the jobs they want to do for the day, the week, or the month. Be sure you let your children take turns choosing the jobs first. There will always be a job that is more popular, and they may want to fight over who gets to do it.
  • Incentive Sheets-While some parents don’t like using incentives to entice their kids to do more work around the house, others sing the praises of using some type of reward system. Kids get even more excited if they can visually see what their reward might be. Consider creating a worksheet that not only lists the job, but also lists the reward once the job is completed!
  • Job Ratings Sheets-Kids will often work more diligently if they know they will receive a good grade. Grades don’t just have to be used in the classroom, however. Parenting magazines and books are full of advice on positive reinforcement. You can create a worksheet that leaves a space for a work grade. In this space, you can put an actual grade, such as “A”, “B”, or “C”, or you can use short phrases, like “Great job!”, “You’re getting there!”, “Good try!”, “Try again!”.
