Children and Family Entertainment
From LoveToKnow Kids
hen searching for children and family entertainment, it can be a challenge to find activities that are equally enjoyable for kids and adults. It is well worth the effort, though, because time spent together forms happy memories and everlasting bonds.
Benefits of Children and Family Entertainment
While most parents realize the importance of providing food, shelter, and clothing for their kids, some underestimate the need for time. Just as kids need a roof over their heads, clothing on their backs, and food in their tummies, they also need to feel loved. When a parent carves out time to spend on children and family entertainment, that parent is giving the valuable gifts of love and attention.
In addition, studies have proven that children and teens who spend quality time with strong adult role models are less likely to do drugs, commit suicide, get pregnant, or join gangs.
Free Children and Family Entertainment
Contrary to popular opinion, family fun doesn't have to break the bank. In fact, some of the most enjoyable outings are completely free or very low cost. Try:
- Free concerts. Many cities provide free concerts, some geared specifically towards children and the family. For example, residents or visitors of the Houston area can attend free concerts at Miller Outdoor Theatre.
- Parks. Everyone knows about the neighborhood parks, but try visiting parks in neighboring cities as well. Some parks offer free picnic areas, barbeque pits, baseball fields, basketball goals, and soccer fields. Some even offer free putt-putt golf and workout areas.
- Museums. Many children's museums offer free family nights. These museums typically provide arts and crafts projects and other hands-on fun.
- Libraries. Libraries in cities across the country host weekly story times for kids of varying ages. Many also feature crafts days and special viewings of movies.
- Skating or bicycling. If you already own skates or bikes, break them out for some healthy outdoor fun.
- Letterboxing. Once you have made your own stamp and notebook, letterboxing is completely free. It is an activity that gets your kids outside and also exercises their minds.
- Hiking. Many children enjoy exploring nature. Find a hiking trail at a local park and get walking. You can even explore your own neighborhood by foot. If you are used to traveling by car, you just might find many undiscovered treasures.
Low Cost Fun
In addition to the numerous free options available, there are also many low-cost entertainment choices for the family.
- Putt-putt
- Bowling
- Picnics
- Camping
- Swimming
Fun Around the House
Who says you have to go out to have fun? There are plenty of fun things to do right around your own house. Just be creative and you'll likely find a whole host of entertainment options right under your nose. Try these for starters:
- Crafts projects. You don't need expensive craft kits or fancy supplies to make art. Everyday objects work just as well. Gather up bits of fabric, string, paper towel rolls, wrapping paper, and any other supplies you can find. Provide glue, scissors, markers, and crayons, and let the creativity flow!
- Make your own music. Many items around the house make wonderful musical instruments. Gather up pots and pans and use wooden spoons as your drumsticks. Fill several small glasses with varying amounts of water and use spoons to experiment with the sounds.
- Cook together. Cooking is an enjoyable and educational experience for kids. It also provides plenty of opportunity for conversation and laughs. Make sure that you supervise young kids at all times in the kitchen.
- Sing and dance. Put on some fun, lively music and wiggle.
