Child Safety Devices
From LoveToKnow Kids
Injuries are a leading cause of death in youngsters; thankfully a number of child safety devices are available on the market. Here are some examples:
Examples of Child Safety Devices
Safety Seats and Seat Belts
There is no doubt that putting children in an approved child safety seat is an effective way to keep them safe while traveling in a vehicle. Using one lowers the risk of a child suffering a fatal injury by more than 70 percent for babies and over 50 percent for toddlers.
Being injured in a car accident is the leading cause of fatal injuries in children under the age of 14. Doing something as simple as making sure your child is buckled in properly every time he or she gets into a vehicle may save his or her life.
If you reason that since you are only going to the store and that nothing is likely to happen, you may be interested to learn that about three-quarters of car crashes occur close to home - within 25 miles of a person's residence to be exact. Over half of them happen in locations where the speed limit is less than 40 mph.
Finger Shields for Doors
If you have ever experienced the pain of getting your finger caught in a door hinge, you will appreciate a product like the Fingershield Child Safety Device. The Fingershield is a shield that fits over the hinge of almost any door.
The product is marketed mainly to schools and other types of public buildings, but it can also be used in the home to prevent these types of injuries. A pinch like that is not something you will ever forget after the fact.
Window and Other Locks
Installing locks on windows will keep children from sliding the window open and falling out. In addition, you will want to make sure that you don't place chairs, tables, dressers, or other types of furniture that a child can crawl on top of near a window.
The medicine cabinet in the bathroom should also be kept locked at all times. Young children can be very creative when it comes to reaching things that are stored up high, and you shouldn't be lulled into any kind of a false sense of security by thinking if the cabinet is out of reach from the floor that a child can't get into it.
Cabinets that hold cleaning products should also be kept locked. It may be a little inconvenient to have to stop to unlock the cabinet every time you want to get something out of it, but it is far better to take the extra step to keep your children safe from accidental poisoning.
Corner Cushions
These devices should be installed on coffee and end tables so that youngsters don't bump into the sharp edges while they are walking (or running) through your home.
Outlet Covers
Any exposed outlet should be fitted with an outlet cover. It will protect children from getting a shock if they get too curious about the outlets and try to stick a finger or a piece of cutlery in one.
Safety Gates
These devices should be placed at the top of the stairs to protect young children from being injured in a fall. You may also consider placing one in the doorway of a toddler's room. Once a child is too old to sleep in a crib, you want to make sure he or she doesn't get up in the middle of the night and start wandering through your home unsupervised.
The child safety devices mentioned here are examples of simple ways you can keep your children safe. They are well worth the price to install them in your home.
