Bratz Dolls

From LoveToKnow Kids

Is your daughter asking for Bratz dolls? If so, she is not alone. While some girls yearn for the sweet innocence of princess toys, others are enamored with the spunky divas.

About Bratz Dolls

Bratz dolls were launched in 2001 by MGA Entertainment. The dolls are positioned as high-fashion trendsetters. These 10" fashion dolls are extremely popular among elementary and middle school kids. Although they are similar in size to Barbie, the Bratz dolls have a completely different look. Dolls have oversized heads featuring large eyes and lush lips. The dolls have a much more ethnic look than the predominantly blue-eyed blonde Barbies.

The Bratz-- Cloe, Jasmin, Jade, and Sasha-- are stylish girls, complete with cutting-edge fashions, glamorous hairstyles, and heavy makeup. The look clearly appeals to girls age 12 and under, and the dolls are now available in many countries around the world.

Awards & Accolades

Some toy experts have also jumped on board, and the dolls have even been named Toy of the Year by Family Fun. Other awards include:

  • Toy Wishes Hot Dozen
  • Australian Girls Toy of the Year
  • BBC Top Toys for 2006
  • The Toy Insider Hot Holiday Toys
  • Family Fun Magazine Winner
  • Dr. Toy 100 Best Children's Products

Controversy

Although many girls love the mini fashionistas, some parents are not so excited about the values the dolls represent. Unlike Barbie, who has had a series of careers through the years, the Bratz dolls are made entirely for fun. The dolls wear revealing clothing, excessive makeup, and lots of jewelry. Critics charge that the dolls encourage materialism and shallow values.

After the release of Bratz Secret Date, many felt that the dolls were encouraging casual and unsafe dating. This doll features a doll and a "mystery" man. The doll is meant to simulate a blind date, an idea many parents find objectionable.

Bratz is more than a name; it also represents an attitude. In both appearance and movies, the characters come across as bored, spoiled, and bratty. Bratz accessories include such privileged fare as:

  • Cappuccino Cups
  • Spas
  • Limousines
  • Sushi Bars
  • "Fur" Stoles
  • Jeweled Jeans
