Boy Clothes

From LoveToKnow Kids

Buying boy clothes for everyday use is relatively easy. Boys typically prefer clothes that are both comfortable and durable. In the preschool and elementary school years, boys are particularly rough on their clothing. Pants or jeans and shoes may need to be replaced before they are outgrown. Special occasion clothing for boys, however, may be worn so infrequently that it is probably best purchased right before the event for which it is meant. Reasonably priced boy clothes for special events can be hard to find, and choices are far fewer than they are for girls. This may be a result of parental reluctance to invest in clothing that will be worn once or not at all.

Baby Boy Clothes

Recently, manufacturers of baby clothes for boys have made an effort to design cute and colorful boy and unisex clothes for babies. Bright primary colors and muted yellows, greens, and blues have been added to the traditional gray, blue, and brown palettes seen for many years in boys’ clothing. Not only can you buy cute boy rompers, overalls, shorts, and pants made of knit fabrics, there are replicas of adult jeans, flannel shirts, and sports clothing. Items with team logos appeal to sports-minded dads. Outlet stores like Carter’s and Oshkosh can provide some good deals in baby boy clothes. Online stores such New Kids Clothes specialize in multi-piece sets. Moderately priced department stores like Mervyns, Kohls, Sears, JC Penney, Target, Walmart, and Kmart all provide washable play clothing at reasonable prices. Department stores like Macy’s, Bloomingdales, Nordstroms, Robinson-May, and others also have a good selection of kids clothing, but at higher prices. Watch too for sales and clearances at specialty stores like babyGap, Baby Style, and Gymboree; find out from store personnel if there is one day each week when new clearance merchandise is released for sale.

Toddler and Preschool Boy Clothes

Play Clothes

Toddlers and preschool boys need lots of sturdy play clothes. In the winter, jeans or slacks and sweaters or long-sleeved t-shirts are suitable. In the summer, shorts and t-shirts or tank tops keep little boys cool as they play in the mud or the sandbox. Selecting pants in twill, denim, and corduroy will assure durability. Reinforced knees are also a good idea; boys tend to play a lot on their knees.

Dressy Clothes

For occasions that require little boys to dress up, parents often compromise by selecting separates instead of dress suits. A blazer or sweater with matching or contrasting slacks comprises a good substitute for a suit. In the summer, nice slacks and a dress shirt and tie and adequate for many occasions. Because dressy clothes are worn infrequently, it may be possible to find boys’ suits, sports coats, and other dressy items in on-line auctions such as eBay, online stores such as New Kids Clothes, and in consignment stores.

For play clothes, the same stores listed above for baby clothes also offer clothes for toddlers, and some for older preschoolers. Also, consider Navy, The Children’s Place and GapKids when you shop for male preschoolers.

Department stores like Macy’s, Bloomingdales, Nordstroms, Robinson-May, and others also have a moderately good selection of boys’ clothes, but at higher prices; they can be good sources for special occasion clothes. Old Navy, the Children’s Place, and Gap Kids all provide a variety of boy’s clothes.

Clothes for Teen Boys

By the time boys reach their teens, they normally have developed strong opinions about what they will or will not wear. There are numerous clothes focus on stylish jeans and other clothes for young men. Clothing associated with surfing, skateboarding, and other sports is also popular with teens. Because many teens can wear the smaller mens’ sizes, the search for dress clothes becomes a bit easier. Nonetheless, for most teen boys, the emphasis is on casual and comfortable clothing. Stores like Eddie Bauer, Lands End, Express, Anchor Blue, Old Navy, American Eagle Outfitters, The Gap, and many others have clothing that appeals to teens.
