Safety Issues

In addition to the typical water safety issues, beach play poses some unique hazards, including:

  • Jellyfish and other stinging creatures can live in the water, and often look like balloons or plastic to kids. Advise children not to touch any "balloons" or unfamiliar items in the water or on land.
  • It is easy to lose track of distance and location while in the water. Select a place marker and have all family members periodically check and adjust their location.
  • Water conditions in the ocean can change quickly. Water that is knee-deep can rapidly become chin high, or higher. Make sure children are wearing adequate safety devices.
  • Oceans are usually full of sinkholes and undercurrents that can pull an unsuspecting swimmer under.
  • As tides change, calm water can quickly become powerful waves.
  • Do not allow young children to stray deep into the water without an adult.

Tweens & Teens

Tweens and teens are big fans of beach sports, from frisbee and catch to a full-fledged game of sand volleyball.
