Our school is not into the Spelling Bee and my childs teacher knows practically nothing about it.  My daughter was in the Regional Bee last year and wants to again this year.  I know there is a new 50 word spelling list for each grade level but again the teacher knows nothing of this.  Does anyone have the list of 50 words?

I have the 2009 Spell It but these wrods are different for 2010.

Thanks.

Are you talking about the Scripps National Spelling Bee?  My understanding is that there are study materials available but that those words do not appear in the competition word set. . .the kids are supposed to know how to spell based on origin and phonetics. My suggestion would be to talk to the principal because generally decisions to participate in that are run through the main office.

The National Spelling Bee site is:  http://www.spellingbee.com/whats-new

Hi Camille,

I am running the spelling bee at our elementary school this year.  We get our words from the following website:

http://dayspringhomeeducators.com/resources.html

I also found these links:

I hope that helps.  Good luck!

Christine

Camille,

My daughters participated in a homeschool spelling bee one year. They used a book called Paideia which lists at least three or four thousands words at different levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced). Another thing we did that really helped some of the kids was to study things like word origins, meanings and common prefixes and suffixes. Sometimes the kid could figure the spelling out just from knowing these rules.

You may also want to check out [http://myspellit.com/downloads.html Merriam-Webster’s Spell It!].

One thing that helped my daughter was to get together in study groups and play hangman and have mock spell offs with the list of words. She is still a better speller than her peers, even though she lost interest in the actual bee. Good luck to your daughter!
