Nearly every day I go to pick up my daughter from kindergarten she has a piece of candy in her hand. Sometimes it’s a lollipop, other times it’s a piece of taffy, but either way these are things that we usually only have once in a while as treats. I’m glad my daughter earns these treats in school with her good behavior, but I can’t say I’m entirely comfortable with her getting a piece of candy every day at school. Today she had two pieces, and already had one in her mouth before I could tell her to save it for after dinner! Does anyone else have this issue? |

Many schools in our area are going to a no-sugar or only on certain occasions type policy. Perhaps an article on the successes of those dropped in the principal’s box? Also, often I think candy is offered because it is cheap and easy - what if you offered to fill a “treasure box” with little prizes for the teacher other than candy? If you provided stickers, erasers, pencils, little toys (oriental trading is a good source, the $1 spot at target, party supply stores), I bet the teacher would use them. |

Love Ann’s idea about filling a treasure box. I think definitely saying something to the principal or at a PTA meeting is a great idea. I wouldn’t want my kids having candy every single day either. Especially at that age. . .my husband gives stamps and stickers and the kids are as happy as clams. |

Our school is a no-candy/gum school and it is great. When my daughter was in Kinder and 1st grade, they earned “tickets” or “critters” to go to the treasure box. My son’s Pre-K class gives him stickers at the end of the day. I don’t agree w/ giving the kids candy. There are plenty of other rewards a child can be given. I agree w/ An about maybe suggesting a treasure box. |

I think the candy would be fine as an occasional treat, but every day seems a bit much. Especially if it spoils her dinner. Then again, have you seen what they feed our kids for lunch? The candy is probably healthier. |

I was indeed surprised that it isn’t a “no candy” school because it is a “no soda” school. I do like the idea of helping out by purchasing a bundle of non-candy items for the treasure box, so I’m going to have to spend some time perusing Oriental Trading Company’s website. |
