We’re on the go a lot, trying out different activities and shows so the kids can experience a lot of different things. Usually we allow the kids to pick out one souvenir when we go somewhere new and interesting, but sometimes my jaw drops when I see the price. Tonight we went to see Cirque Dreams Illumination (which I fully recommend, by the way) and it wasn’t until after my kids each picked out a teddy bear that I found out it was $25 per bear. Yikes!

Moral of the story: Ask how much something costs before announcing that the kids can pick out any souvenir they want.

Growing up, we never did souvenirs. Do you allow your kids to pick up souvenirs when on outings?

So it’s time to pull out the board games. We like Set, Sequence, and Monopoly. What are some of your family’s favorites that the kids can play with too?

What do you do to make the first day of school special? We have “back to school cake” on our first day of school. (I know, a little different because we homeschool. . .) But when I was a teacher, I had parents slip a travel game into the lunch box, or a little note. I had one parent take her child to the zoo (it was right there and free on Wednesdays.) So do you do anything to make your child’s first day back at school special?

Ugh. My girls have to get up at 6 a.m. because our school bus comes at 7 a.m. My almost sixteen-year-old is counting down the days until she gets her license and can sleep another 45 minutes. Just wondering what others do to prepare their kids for that first early morning. I keep getting conflicting advice. Some say just let them sleep in and they’ll be tired that first day but get past it. Others say start waking them up earlier in 15 minute increments. Advice from others in the trenches?

I am so torn! And, badly, need help. There are so many good, fun, educational quality activities for my kids… that they want to do and I want them to do… however, I don’t want them to be overscheduled. I honestly have tried to keep the activities to only one or two at most at a time (on top of school). But my daughter just the other day told me she felt so busy that she wished she could push a pause button on her life for a few days. She is only 9 years old!!

What do I do???

School starts back early here (August 12th). I was wondering if anyone else starts planning five or six weeks out and what your routines are. We are already starting our school clothes shopping and reviewing a few key concepts from last year’s school work, for example. About two weeks before school starts back, I’ll start getting the girls up earlier in the mornings too to try to prepare for that horrid six a.m. alarm clock going off.

I just wanted to say that I love drama. My kids are involved in a few different acting opportunities throughout the year, and I feel like they’ve gained a lot of confidence in public speaking, and are learning some classics (like Shakespeare) at the same time. I wasn’t sure how being in drama might translate to something more practical like public speaking. . .but it seems to have given them the ability to be comfortable standing on stage. So just wanted to share I highly recommend drama as activity if you have time for it.
